TMlbat of parte? Colonel Ochiltree, who ha* travelled much abroad and who lived in Paris for nine months, has recently re turned to the United States. He possesses keen facul ties of observation and is clear and concise in his state ments. "What of Paris?" he said, repeating the question as it was propounded to him. "Crazy, absolutely crazy. If I were a Jew in Paris I would gather my gaberdine about me and get out. Russia by comparison, is a land flowing with civic milk and honey, so far as the Jews are concerned. " Absolutely, conditions in Paris are hideous and a horror. Its legislature is a beer garden, its press the tool of money, its law a farce, while so-called justice is a joke when it isn't an outrage. The Court of Cassation is the one sole tribunal worthy a dog's respect —the one last fteble rift in the clouds that threaten France. And yet, while I was there, Henri Rochefort came out in his paper and said that the judges of the Court of Cassation ought to be taken out and t...

Der Decision. In charming indecison she gazed at the two por traits. The uncertainty in her heart clouded her eyes just enough to soften and render more bewitch ing their splendor. " Which shall it be ? " she murmured. From one to the other of the pictures her glance wandered. Now her countenance would for a mo ment beam with the joy of a settled choice, only to darken again a moment with perplexity. "If I could only say which one!" A sigh fluttered within the tender bosom and escaped from the rosy lips. " Will is dark. I love dark men." She clasped her hands and rapturously scrutinized the nearest portrait. " But Henry is noble and good." A faint flush crept into her cheeks. Her thoughts were with the other picture. "One of them I must marry." Rising to her feet, she paced the floor nervously. It was a life's happiness that hung trembling in the balance. 11 I am sure both of them love me with all their hearts." Hand was pressed in hand, until the blood for sook the taper fingers wi...

At the request of the board of managers, the city has placed a row of young shade trees on Hospital street along the entire front of the Hebrew Cemetery. The pool tournament at the Jefferson Club last Tuesday night, after a spirited contest, was won by Mr. Raphael Levy. The prize was a handsome cue, valued at $10, and guaranteed to win every game when properly handled. The Ladies' Hebrew Benevolent Association hns just issued an attractive little pamphlet containing its charter, reports of officers, and a list of members. A perusal of its pages will give a splendid idea of the good work the organization is doing. Her fr...

cause, during recent years, men and women hare been finding larger and more frequent bits of common ground in their amusements. It is not enough that they should live, love, suffer and die together. The world will be full of jangles as long as men and wo men do not laugh together. That, happily, is what they are learning to do. Of course there is a tenden cy to go to extremes. Take a weight out of a bal ance and it goes up with a bound before it settles in to equilibrium. The weight of old-time restrictions has been removed from the lives of women, and the new balance has not yet been reached. They are on the rebound now, and they show it in nothing so much as in their amusements. Maybe the spirit of camaraderie with men has been carried too far, but no one can deny that it exists. One of the proofs is this very dying out of the cry against men's clubs and the arising of a new wail in its place. This latest lamentation comes from the clubs themselves. It seems that a good many of tb...
