A Continent of Ice. It seema incredible that tho Uni ted States formerly hadjan arctic cli mate, fcnd va3 covered with ice many thousand feet in thickness; but such is the united testimony of geologists : - Prof. Agassi 25 comes to tho con clusion that tho continent of North America was once covered in ico a mile in thickness, thereby agreeing with Prof. Hitchcock and other cm inent geological writers concerning the glacal period. .In proof of this conclusion ho says that tho slopes of tho - Alleghany range of mountains are glacier-worn to tho very top, except h few points which wero about level of the city mass. Mount Washington, for in stance, i over six thousand feet high, and the rough, unpolished sur face of its summit, covered with frag ments, iust below the level of which glacier marks corao to an end, tells that it lifted its head alono above the desolate waste of ico and snow. No Home. No home I What a misfortune! How sad the thought ! There are thousands who know nothing of the blessed influeneo of a comfortable home; merely because of a want of thriit, or dif-eipated habits- Youth spent in a frivolous amusement?, aud demoralizing associations, leaving them at middle age, when the phys ical and intellectual man should bo in its greatest vigor, enervated and without one laudable ambition. Friends long since lost, confidence gone, and nothing to look to in old ae, but a mero loierauon in me community where they ehould bo or naments. No home to fly to when wearied with the struggles incident to life; no wife to cheer them in their despondency; no virtuous household to give zest to the j oys of life.
