Spirit of the Press. THE ASSOCIATION—THE ADJOURNED MEETING. From the Dublin Freeman's Journal. It is with feelings of deep pain that we have lo record the proceedings which marked the termination of Tuesday’s meeting. Yet we are not without hope. We know the wisdom, the prudence, the devotion of the patriot whose services date half u century back. We have fuith, too, in the patriotism of William Smith O’Brien, and the tone and temper, no less than the conciliating language of John O’Connell, give assurance that he will be amongst the foremost to take a step towards producing that reunion to which he so affectingly alluded when suggesting the adjournment of the Association. We are not, then, without hope that the temporary disunion which appeared in the once unbroken ranks of Repeal will speedily terminate, and the Conciliation Hall will once again ring with the commingling shouts of O’Connell, O’Brien, and Repeal. ENGLISH OPINION. There can be no question (says the Dublin Freeman of the B<l inst.) but the marked development of the peace policy of O’Connell has greatly strengthened his hands in England. The man who was unfairly represented as the fierce agitator, the fiery demagogue, the promoter of discontent and animosity, is now looked to by all parties in England as the conservator of the peace—the man through whom alone any government can rule this county* The Times of Friday is distinct in its avowal of the necessity of governing Ireland on the principles so long advocated by O’Connell. BRITISH PARLIAMENT FAMINE IN IRELAND. Mr. O’Connell wished to know whether it had been correctly stated that it was the intention of the Government to refuse any further relief to the destitute poor in Ireland? Nothing could be better than the conduct of the late Government in relation to the late famine in Ireland, and he should be sorry if it had correctly stated that, after the 15th August, the present Government intended to terminate the granting of any further relief. The Chancellor of the Exchequer concurred in the opinion of the beneficial effects which the measures of relief of the late Government had been attended in Ireland ; they had not only saved the people famine, but had also preserved the public peace. But that which was most beneficial when adopted as a measure of relief for temporary distress would become an evil of great magnitude if it were rendered permament (hear, hear). There is one great object in the employment of the fine arts and the exercise of cultivated taste ; it is to hand down the events and deeds of our time, or those immediately preceding us, to the respectful remembrance of posterity. For this purpose statues are cut, and pictures drawn, and monuments are raised, and buildings, are decorated with has reliefs and frescos. The giving of names to places that stand in need of them is an exercise of taste for this purpose; though it is so occasional and infrequent that its importance is apt to be overlooked. We purpose to write something, now and then, with reference to young persons, particularly those of the emigrant and Catholic community; and the present occasion, we give to young men of that class. We wish to recommend to them the duty of intellectual cultivation. They have the same reasons as all other young persons to lead them to it; but they have also some others, peculiar to themselves. Many things tend to separate them from the general population, differences of religion, manners, &.C.; in consequence, they have to contend against the difficulties of a contracted class; they are i)he objects of prejudice, ridicule, and frequently of injustice. AMESBURY, June, 20, 1846. Dear Sir, —If you chance to travel this way, you may observe a place called Salisbury Point. It is about four miles north of Newburyport on the banks of the Merrimac, and is divided from Amesbury by a river ; at about a mile from the outlet of which the two towns meet, and form what is called Amesbury. Here is a considerable waterfall, and some half dozen factories; and the small river falls into the Merrimack here, as the latter does into the Atlantic at Newburyport. There are many interesting objects to be seen in this neighbourhood, but of late nothiug has drawn so much attention of the good people of Amesbury as the appearance of a Catholic’s tombstone in the very middle of their graveyard. It displays the Cross, it exhibits a representation of the Blessed Virgin, with other angelic figures, and it stands in a conspicuous part of the cemetery. PHILADELPHIA, August 23, 1846. Frightful Death in an Iron Furnace—The Tariff —'The Next Elections — St. Michael’s Burned Church. Dear Sir, —Among the many dreadful and fatal accidents that are from day to day befalling the church-burners here, none has equalled that which lately befel one of the hands employed at one of our iron foundries near Bushhill, where this man, whilst engaged in his work, was caught by the mill wheel, dragged into it, and ground to pieces. He was so awfully mangled as to render it impossible to ascertain whether his body was the body of a man or that of a beast. Thus is the anger of God daily overtaking these church-burners. The tariff, if not repealed, will ruin the trade of Philadelphia. Her trade being mainly dependent on her coal and iron works, is deeply injured by the repeal of the duty on English iron and coal, which can now be imported for less than it can be manufactured here. Bishop — The beginning of February I set out to visit our different settlements and stations, and to form new ones among the neighboring tribes of our reduction. The entire surface of this region was then covered with snow, four or five feet deep; and I was compelled to go from the Buy of Pens d’Oreilles to the Prairie des Chevaux in a bark canoe, a distance of 250 miles. I was among my dear Flat-heads and Pends d’Oreilles (ear-rings) of the mountains, during the Paschal time, and had the great consolation of finding them replete with zeal and fervour in fulfilling the duties of true children of prayer.
