§ a *lg THE HIGHEST COURT. —A party of politicians wore recently assembled in a bar room, and the discussion turned upon legal and judicial questions, tine presumptuous customer ventured it as his opiuion, that the Supreme Court of the United States was the highest tribunal to which Americans could appeal. At this juncture one of the party attacked the first speaker after this style: "A man who says that the Supreme Court of the United States is the highest one we've got, don't knownothin't The Court of Chancery is the highest we've got. You kin take a case from the Justice's Court, to the County Court ; from that to the District Court ; from that to the Supreme Court of the State ; from that to the Supreme Court of the United Statos ; and from that to the Court of Chancery ; and if they decide agin you there, whyyerfluminixed—that's all! You can't get no appeal from the Court of Chancery ; and it's called Chancery because its the last chance you've got !" This astounding piece of i...

The Democracy nil Right* [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 1 March 1860

The Democracy nil Right* The " unterrified" are nil right side | up. They got together after their old ! style, and have shown tlicirancient vitalij ty in riproarioud junglings and wrangling* and by agreeable displays of the "manly art" upou the floor of their convention. Even so strict a party niau as our exGovernor, or the State Printer, is given 110 opportunity to lind fault with the conduct of the party. Here we have dissentions inside the organization, in delicious abundance. It had been feared that the old war spirit in the party was dying out. It has shown itself to be alive and kicking. Good tor the Democracy I It is a refreshing contemplation, that if a ''split" is avoided, each contentious member ol the convention will bind up his wounds, get his bunged eye soothed with a fresh oyster, or his nose mended with an adhesive plaster, and contentedly return to his home, there to work with ardor for the very ticket that cost him a cracked sconce or a swelled cheek. If it hns a s...

[From our own Correspondent.] Sacramento Correspondence. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 1 March 1860

[From our own Correspondent.] Sacramento Correspondence. SACRAMENTO, Feb. 28. 1860. EDITOR APPEAL : —The Governor has appointed A. Gray Morgan, to be Superintendent ot' Immigration at the port of Sun Francisco, and the Senate unanimously contirmed the appointment. The great Bulkhead question broke loose this morning in the Senate. Just before the time for the assembling of that body, the indefatigable Parsons was seen to move with unusual tleetness up the Capitol steps, and the undersigned, with his accustomed sagacity, immediately conjectured that the time had arrived, and so it had. Mr. Titus of El Dorado, introduced a Bulkhead bill, and after a long debate it was referred in a manner acceptable to its frieuds. Two San Francisco Senators are to be on the special committee of live, but two. as you well know, is not a majority of five. 1 rather think the measure has been held back until sufficient strength could be gathered to push it along smoothly and promptly through its various ...

The Minstbbls.—The offering of prizes for the best and worst conundrums, secured the Minstrels a very fair house, last evening. The one judged best, was wretched enough to have secured the prize offered for the worst one. But the audience stamped and bellowed their own judgment, and the matter was settled in accordance with their decree. The following is the stupid thing that took the first prize: "Why is Billy Birch like a hungry dog?" Axs.—" Because he is heavy 011 the bones.'' The prize for this was awarded to a man, styled •• Frencliy." The worst one was the following meaningless, pointless trash : "Why is a keg of uaili like four pounds of putty ?" Ans.—'-Because 'Sugar-heeled Jack' wears No. 14 boots.'' •'Scotty," the well known attachee of the Theatre, had the credit of perpetrating this, aii'l was awarded the cup. If these are the best that can be concocted, the conundrum dodge may be considered pretty well "played out." The Minstrels go to i immictoo, to-day. ASSAY OFFICES....
