Crackdown on garment industry A special strike force of U.S. Department of Labor Investigators begin a crackdown this week on the Los Angeles garment industry looking for violations of federal Wage and Hour laws by employers of undocumented workers. William Buhl, regional administrator for the Labor Department’s Employment Standards Administration, announced the formation of the eightmember investigative force and the crackdown. “The strike force effort will be aimed at uncovering and eliminating minimum wage, overtime, recordkeeping and child labor violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA),” Buhl said. VIOLATIONS “These are longtime and accepted workplace standards, but our research indicated they are being grossly violated by some unscrupulous garment industry employers," he noted. He added that the objective of the special enforcement effort is to remove the economic advantage from employers who hire undocumented workers and pay them substandard wages. “We believe we can ...

Juarez gets Bradley staff post Alberto Juarez Jr. this week joined the staff of Mayor Tom Bradley’s office of small business assistance, as business liaison for the office. Juarez, 38, will receive a salary of $23,050 for the post. He has resigned his position as a member of the city civil service commission to accept the job, replacing Rudy Guerra, who resigned to accept a post with the federal department of commerce. Juarez also leaves the law firm of Miller and Miller, where he worked as an administrator. Previously, he was director of personnel and employee relations for the county’s Health Systems Agency, and, prior to that, was executive director of the One-Stop Immigration Center. A resident of Highland Park, Juarez received a degree in public administration from UCLA, and attended Glendale University College of Law. 11 measures on ballot for June Eleven ballot issues will be facing the voters on the June 3 primary ballot, Assemblyman Richard Alatorre said this week. In releasing a rundown of the ballot order, Alatorre said that the state’s voters registration has topped the ten million mark, but five million persons eligible to register remain off the voting rolls. Student leaders confer at Garfield Problems confronting senior high school students and their schools will be discussed by principals, advisers and student council presidents of the Los Angeles Unified School District at their annual conference 7:30 a.ra.-3:00 p.m. today at Garfield High School. Civic and community leaders will swell the attendance to nearly 300 for the conference which will emphasize “leadership for the 1980s." Students attending will represent the top leadership among the 49 senior high schools in the Los Angeles school district. Judge Egly bused to ELA schools Judge Paul Egly made it on Monday to the eastside schools which he failed to visit Friday afternoon, as he continued his crash course in the realities of life at LA city schools. Visited Monday were Wilson High, Roosevelt High, Hollenbeck Junior High, and Soto Street and Kennedy elementary schools. As had been the case with the visits to schools made by Egly on Thursday and Friday, the judge and accompanying lawyers traveled by school bus and had little comment on what they had seen. One attorney, however, characterized the judge’s reaction as noting the realities of life at segregated schools, and also noting the difficulty of removing the segregated status from isolated minority schools like those on the eastside. Meanwhile, the board dealt Monday night with what could be termed peripheral issues arising from the lengthy desegregation battle. In ELA school* Follow through called success Project Follow Through, a federally sponsored program, provides educational enrichment for poverty level children at six schools in the East LA area. Local schools which are Involved are Belvedere Elementary, Eastman Ave., Harrison, Murchison, Sheridan and Hammel St. In working with children in grades one through three, it aims to reverse the cycle of low achievement for poverty level children, according to director Russell Matthews. SCORES Matthews said that children who have been in the program have consistently scored higher in reading and math then their counterparts at the same schools who have not been part of Follow Through. Even after they finish Follow Through, test scores for the children continue to be higher. For example, in 1978, the latest year for which figures are available, Follow Through students scored at the 2.8 level in the third grade, compared tro 2.6 for non-Follow Through students.
