Report oi«iu' Sc-tr«iaiy «f tin- Interior. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 24 February 1850

Report oi«iu' Sc-tr«iaiy «f tin- Interior. The first Report from tho Head of the new Pepartment of the Interior is an exceedingly interesting state piper, which we regret to deprive our California readers the pleasure of perusing entire We extract copiously therefrom regarding the Public hands of this country: also touching the Pacific Railroad. No provision has yet been made to extend the i law- tot the disposition of the public lands, into the territories of Oregon, California, and NewMexico. The public interest would seem to reauire that this should he done at an early day. To carry it into effect, the negotiation of treaties with tlie Indian tribes, who claim titles to the lands, the creation of the office of Surveyor Gen* eral in each of those territories, and the establishment of Land offices in convenient districts will be necessary, accompanied with the usual appropriation for surveys. Nothing beyond this, I or out of the ordinary coin-so, will be required, i in providing fo...

Hc-iTtury ot tin Miivy'i Htport. We extract only the portion of this Report, having reference to the contracts tor Mjiil Steamers. After defining the nature of nose existing, and stating the circumstance* attending the t'nltilnicnt of the contracts between the United State- and California, and Oregon, the Report goes onto say, regarding the rowels employed. The law under which these vessels are constructed does not clearly and distinctly define the powers and I rights of the Government over them. '.Vhiie thepropiietors bave been willing to receive (in lioanl ilic passed midshipmen, they have nevertheless claimed ' ' the right to prescribe their duties, and to assign them their positions: nnd while the passed midshipmen are received v watch officers, the executive duties of the . ship and her navigation may be confided so other.- selected by the proprietors. I therefore urgently Invite ihe attention ot' Congress ti) the law under which the contract was made, to the service in which t...

Praeas nt arajulan. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 24 February 1850

Praeas nt arajulan. We extract from the Correspondence of Mr. Gilbert the following account of a difficulty at Acapulco, .January 19m. There was rather a ridiculous yet un|>loasant affair happened this afternoon between the authorities of the town and the pas-eiiLrers of the Oregon. The facts. 1 believe, are substantially these: Some unpleasant word- having occurred between a Captain William* and Captain rear-on. (Williams, who is a passenger, charging Pearson with ungentlemanly treatment ofnis passengers,) they finally came to blows, daring which 'passage of arms" Capt Pearson received a blow apnii the nose and lip which knocked him down and started the claret, and Williams caught a blow- on the cheek wmch lefts lurid spot underbid left eye. At this moment the ■friend- of both parties interfered, hut unfortunately the fracas did not end here. This occurred on the beacsi on landing iv front of the town, and only a few n»l- from the yward-housc. The Alcalde, who was at the...

MONDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 25, 1850 Thtr f ItirlnnMrtiit of thf >l«rfcM. The eudden nnd cxtremo fluctufttions of prices in San Francisco Imvo occasioned a great deal of surprise among persons interested, who have not taken the trouble to examine the matter, and reason upon the cau«c« which produco them. It is of great conwquenco to all engagod in trade that the market should bo as nearly stable in its prices a* in tho naturo of things it is possible- for it to bo. Tho great law of supply and demand ; which regulates prices olsowhero, would produce tho name effects here, notwithstanding the rosistloss tides of emigration, which seem to sweep away, in thoir headlong career, all tho established landmarks of trade, if San Francisco wero not a city of rumors, a great whispering gallery, whero any report, however absurd, in repeated again and again, with a thousand additions, bo that it often hnppcns a glut and a scarcity occur on the MM day.
