PAGE 6 THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SMITHVILLE, TEXAS 78957 Thursday. May 27. Wfc Recreation Studied ICA News Lack Of Attention Cited In Agriculture bv Erlene Goertz The Independent Cattle- men's Association as an association was not involved in the Texas presidential preference primary, but the statements of all the candi- dates were monitored closely. The lack of attention the candidates gave agriculture in general and livestock in particular was disappoint- ing. One statement in/ a broadcast commercial on behalf of President Ford, however, did get the ICA'S attention and response. The commercial said that the President had helped cattlemen by limiting quantities of imported beef -- a claim ICA just can't believe. The ICA response came as a statement from President T. A. Cunningham in which he called on the President to make good his claim by coming out for Senate Bill 595 to cut im- ports. In the statement Cunningham pointed out that the bill is sponsored by Oklahoma's Republican se...

PAGE 2 BASTROP COUNTY TIMES. SMITHVILLE. TEXAS 78957 THURSDAY. JUNE 3. 1976 ()ur^ pinions Get Out The Vott Charles E. Lawrence. Project Leader of the County Officials Program of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, included the following open letter to all county in a recent newsletter. Although it is principally addressed to county official'. the ideas expressed in it deserve consideration by each and every voter as well. The TIMES is pleased to share Mr Lawrence's thoughts with our readers. When public officials are running for office we know that they work very hard to get people to vote. It would certainly be worthwhile if they tried just as hard to get out to vote on the years they are not running. The First Primary is past so we must look forward to the General Election. I sincerely believe it is the duty of public officials to encourage people to vote. We like to think that our government operates by the will of the people. This should mean all or most of the people not ...

And all across the nation, people seemed more inclined to think of Memorial Day as the day they run the Indy 500 than as the solemn day of remembrance it was designed to be. But not the members of VFW Posts 6115, Elgin, and 8906. Austin. Representa- tives of both posts, as well as representatives of the McDade post, the American Legion. and the Latin American cemetery in Elgin, gathered together Sunday morning at the Elgin VFW. There Elgin post 6115 hosted a breakfast and Memorial Day observances. After the VFW cooks served up a satisfying meal of eggs, bacon, and sausage, all present gathered for the raising of the flag over the post. As the colors were sent up, Elgin High student Ardley Perkins blew the strai...
