ANDERSON'S CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 16 November 1883

ANDERSON'S CREEK. (FROM OUR OWK CORRESPONDENT.) The continuous rain has caused the greatest lood in the Yarra we have ex- perienced for some years, and I am afraid very much damage has been done. Chatty and Party, managed to secure most of their property at the dam, and the few stringers they had put in the river will not be a very serious loss; however, it will be some little time before they will be able to start again. Mr. David Mitchell has: purchased, from Messrs. Stiggant. and Hartrick: their "Crown Company Dyke Claim,"' for the sum te £425. He intends at: once to carry the tunnel from Grant's. battery right through, and I think there. is very little doubt but it will turn out. a profitable venture, Nothing, as yet, has been dtfititely. settled respecting the Pig Tail Claim: Some dissatisfaction is expressed at the laxity exhibited by the authoritles with respect to this lease. Two. years I thinkis quite long enough for aknown payable claim to be kept idle, besides its being d...

THE ARGUS EXPEDITION TO NEW GUINEA.—DEATH OF PROFESSOR DENTON. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 16 November 1883

THE ARGUS EXPEDITION TO NEW GUINEA~-DEATH OF PROFESSOR DENTON. News was received on the 13th October that the members of the expedition to New Guinea, organised and fitted out by The Argus proprietary, had been prostrated by fever while prosecuting their exploration of the island. The expedition included Captain Armit, the special correspondent of The Argus ; Professor Denton, who accompanied him for purposes of scientific research; Mr. Loftus Irving, second in command and a large party. The expedition had made a very successful attempt to reach the interior, having penetrated as far as Pauman, a vil lage of the Seramina, and a large number of interesting descriptive articles relating to the nature of the country and the habits and customs of the natives, from the pen of Captain Armit, had appeared in The Argus. The telegram announcing the misfortune which had occurred the party, stated that the Ellangowan had arrived at Cooktown, Queensland, with Captain Armit and Mr. Irving on boa...

The Evelyn Observer. Published Every Friday. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 16 November 1883

The Evelyn Observer. Published Every Friday. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1883. On Friday last, during a heavy thunderstorm, myriads of young frogs were observed to fall with the rain ; the road near Lilydale being literally covered with them. The floods on the Upper Yarra, near Healesville, during Monday and Tues- day last, were the highest experienced for the last 14 or 15 years, the coach com- munication being entirely cut of, and the mails had to be conducted to and from Lilydale and Healesville on saddle horse, via Yarra Flats. On Friday last the Lilydale Tent, I.O.R., held their anniversary gathering on the Lilydale cricket ground, where the usual sport, viz., footracing, racing in sacks, greasy tailed pigs, &c., came off. The Lilydale brass band was in at- tendance during the day and greatly added to the amusements, the young folks getting up several dances. At 5 o'clock a move was made for the Rechabite Hall, where tea had been pro- vided, to which a good number sat down. Af...
