COLOURED BANK-NOTES. The Bank of England 1b the only bank which always issues plainly printed white paper bank-notes, whatever their value. Other coun* tries UBe printed notes , in colours. The Russian notes are printed in all the colours of the rainbow. Pw th« one-colour Russian notes, bloe, yel low, or bright purple inks are most favoured. The 100-franc note of France is printed in four eolourB— blue, pink, black, and yellow. Ger man notes are mottled, while those of Austrian banks are extremely vivid in colour and are printed , in two languages, Slav ©a one side and Ger man on the other. WATER FINDERS. rhe Queensland Land Department employe two officers, officially desig nated "water-finder®." One works with the automatic finder and the other with the old-fashioned twig, one checking the other, A remark able demand for their services has set in. In fact, it is impossible to meet all the requests in a given time. A report was recently submitted to the Lands Department on the result of their operations in the Shire of Murgon, where the; conjointly select ed a number of sites for wells. Seven cases were quoted. In one, 'water to the amount of 600 gallons . per hour was struck, tbe pump being •anable to reduce ' the flow. In an other, 350 gallons, and in a third 150 gallons, were obtained ; while in two other cases good supplies were ob tained without, any estimate of the quantity given. One farmer went 20 feet ' and obtained a - small supply. Another struck salt water. The far-^ mere had to sink from 75 feet to 280 feet to get the better supplies.

Presentation to Returned Soldiers. Monday night last was given over by the residents to welcoming two of its gallant lads, Gunner A. Shears and Private W. Mjhill, who, well-nigh four years ago, had sacrificed everything to shoulder a rifle and help the empire in her time of greatest need to keep democracy free. The welcome was cordial and heartfelt, and the large gather ing assembled very warmly sup ported the remarks of the chairman, Mr L. H. B. Webb, with hearty rounds of cheering when the cere mony was performed of presenting each soldier with a handsomely de signed gold medal, subscribed by the residents and given as a small mark of appreciation for valor and gallantry, and their magnificent efforts on behalf of a grateful nation. Gunner Shears responded on be half of the recipients, and ex pressed their pleasure of the fine welcome accorded them, and also how pleased they were to be back at Tacumwal.
