CRANIOLOGY AND VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, A SIMILE. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 20 January 1827

CRANIOLOGY AND VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, A SIMILE. The subject of craniology, improperly called phreno-   logy, has now fallen into its natural and well-deserved contempt. We maybe allowed for a moment to in- dulge from the severer strictures on colonization, and to point out some traits of comparison, which occur to       us, as existing between this chimera of the brain and Van Diemen's Land. Craniology is, then, no-modern discovery, but was touched upon two or three hundred years ago by Johan de Retham a German Doctor ; about which time Tasman also had a peep at his own head in this Island. The jumbled confusion of the or- gans in heads mapped out according to craniological   rule, is repulsive and heterogeneous, and the jarring proximity of grants of land, left as in the brain, with- out any distinct line of demarcation, opens the door to mutual intrusion. MISCELLANY, ORIGINAL AND SELECT. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 20 January 1827

MISCELLANY, ORIGINAL AND SELECT. Sir JOSHUA REYNOLDS. - This admired artist did more than any other to promote the English School of Art, which is now advancing with such rapid strides   to outstrip the productions of the Continent. But he deserves the applause of posterity not more for his     ^mjcill ti a painter, than for his patronage, and as it were, creation of the genius of others? He was the ¿tatt who brought Zoffany th'e successor in the eccen- tric walk of Hogarth into' notice. Sensible of the 4Veat talent exhibited by WÍf< Óafraid (the father of le present reverend pastor-at Pittwater) tn a painting of Calvert'* brewery, he ' immediately commissioned { x Jiini to paint a picture of a brewery in complement to xkhé rising merits'of a younjf anctpioniisiog aitist.
