THE WAY TO WIN A LADY'S LOVE. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 25 August 1899

THE WAY TO WIN A LADY'S LOVE. A good deal has been said lately in the wonman's columns of papers as to the best way to win the affections of the gentler sex. An old experienced hand at the business says that the first essential is good nature and good spirits, coupled with a manly physique. Bile Beans are the specific to use to. attain this end. They put the diges tive organs in perfect condition, aid the liver, heart, lungs' action, act as tonic to the whole system ; and for lisuch ai ueits tas pile costi i n's - digestion, sour stomach, debility, and lack of physical, tone they will prove an undoubted specific. Sold at 1s 1½d per box, they are within the reach of all. They are manufactured in one of the best fitted and equipped laboratories in the world, at Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A., and the fact that they are presribed by the first physicans in that country, prtoves that they are a medi cine of no ordinary merit. Obtainable at all chemists, or the Australian Depot, 39 Pitt-street...

USES OF OLD NEWSPAPERS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 25 August 1899

USES OF OLD NEWSPAPERS. The far-seeing housekeeper always keeps a stock of old newspapers, know ing to how many uses they may be ap plied. For the kitchen stove no better polisher is required, and it may be burned as soon as used, thus doing away with dirty and malodorous rags and brushes. As a floor padding, to be placed b,eneath the carpets, news papers are particularly useful, preclud ing the entrance of the ubiquitous moth, which has a wholesome dread of printers' ink. For this reason, furs, winter garments and draperies should be well wrapped in newspapers before being packed away.

A CHURCH CHOIR OF BIRDS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 25 August 1899

A CHURC CH [OIR OF E?IRDS. A gentleman who has just returned from Italy has been -telling about a church choir in that country which is composed of singing birds. It is the only choir of the kind in the w~orld, and has been in existence some months. The church .which pos sesses this novel and remarkable choir is the Chapel of St. Peter, in Florence. The birds-300 in number-are all in separate cages, which are arranged in rows on both sides of the altar. The leader is a girl, who has had the birds under her own personal training for over two years. The whole of the musical part of the service is most efficiently and exquisitely rendered by the birds. The leader starts each hymn by whistling the first few notes, and then the birds take it up, and, in obedience to the movement of their instructor's hand, leave off and join in, according to the musical setting of the words. The effect which the sweet and thrill ing singing of these' beautiful' little birds has upon the immense congrega ...

THE PROFITS OF PIG FEEDING. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 25 August 1899

T?HE PROF'ITS OF PIG FEEDING. We have frequently (says the "New Zealand Farmer ") drawn attention to the profits to be made from the proper management of pigs on a farm home stead. As an illustration of the profit able character of this class of live stock, we may instance a case reported to us a few days ago in Auckland. Major Nelson George, the well-known breeder of thoroughbred horses, in formed us that in November last he bought two little month-old suckers of the Berkshire breed-a sow and a barrow. These were put in a stye, and fed with nothing but the house hold refuse scraps and.milk, no grain nor sharps being given to them what. ever. In April the pigs were killed, and the dressed weight of the s)w was 1951bs. and of the barrow 210lbs. Tlhes are great weights indeed for pigs only about six months' old, and with out any grain feeding. The bacon curing works took one of these animals at 31d per lb., at which price the dressed carcusees of the two pigs were worth £5 7s. Gd. Thi...

SOME GOOD STORIES. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 25 August 1899

:O?.3E ! GOOI)D ST RIES. A] A striking story comes to us anent Madame Adelina Patti, the renowned prima donnr, which is characteristic of her geniality and kindness of heart. The incomparable singer was walking out one day in the neighbourhood of her castle in Wales, when a sudden to thirst afflicted her, and she called at a ft cottage to get a glass of new milk. k When she had partaken of this whole same- refreshment,,. she opened her purse to pay the cost. But the peasant woman raised her hand in d gentle remonstrance and said- "There is nothing to pay for the milk, but will tmadame kindly sing to ti us one of her sweet songs I" q 'Patti entered the humble home, v lifted her magnificent voice, and sang, in her most superb style, " Home, Sweet Home 1". The astonished and delighted cot tagers listened in raptures, and tendered their distinguished visitor their warmest thanks. Then, from an inner apartment, came a feeble voice, "` pleading-" Please sing that again; it was so heavenly...
