MAKE YOUR, DISTRICT KNOWN. [Newspaper Article] — Hopetoun Courier and Mallee Pioneer — 23 October 1914

MAKE lTOUP, DISTRICT KNOWN. Concerning some parts ot the ctis rict news comes bat seldom. This s not entirely oar fault} we have 10 miraculous power of knowing what is happening at all the places witlun our area of circulation. It is the fault of residents in the silent places. Will some man or woman take the matter m hand and cause the silence to cease. If no one is doing it for your district,- will you try on these lines ? Send accounts of public and social events in your township and neigh borhood, such as weddings, deaths, accidents, concerts, matters touching district industries, etc. Write Iho names of persons very distinctly. Don't bother about grammar Di spelling ; it's the editor's work to look atter those trifles. The barest skeleton is enough. Write only on one side of the paper. Give information; but let criticism alone. Write your name and address on same corner—not, for publication, but to prove good faith.

The Drought. BUYING SEED WHEAT. [Newspaper Article] — Hopetoun Courier and Mallee Pioneer — 23 October 1914

TheDrought. BUYING SEED WHEAT. Mr. F. Hagelthorn,Minister for Public .AVorks, thinks that it is better for the Stale to purchase seed wheat direct for struggling farmers for next season than to issue certificates authorising each settler to bo given an advance to buy on his own account. A leading country member of the Legislative Assembly staled on Wednesday that he feared that there would be dis satisfaction if the quality was not in all cases all that it should be, and he oppressed the view that the practice adopted by the Irvine Ministry in 1902-3 of issuing certificates authorising purchase of those requiring the seed would be the more desirable course. Defend ing the decision arrived at by the Government, Mr. Hagelthorn said that the circumstances were quite different now from what they were in 1902-3. ' It was advisable to avoid double haulage, and it seemed to him that the departmental ex perts would buy us judiciously as farmers would.
