When this disease makes its appearance a change of seed is advisable. The new seed should be obtained from placos where the rot has not shown itself during the season. The land should also be drained and a rotation of crops adopted. Dramatic Entertainment. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 18 March 1893

Dramatic Entertainment ; An entertainment was given with great success by the Nowra Amateur Dramatic Club at the School of Arts, Nowra, on Thursday evening last. There was a large attendance, including many ladies, and the performances of the company elicited frequent applause. The entertainment consisted of two sketches, ' No. 1 round the Corner,' in which Messrs. J. Weston, C. S. Mobs, and M. Ryan took part, and lf Woodcock's Little Game,' the cast of which was supplied by Mrs. (Dr.) King, Mrs. Whittell, Miss Miriam Moss, Miss B. Whittell, Messrs. T. Marriott, S. D. Asher, and M. Ryan. The latter piece was the brightest and best staged, but the production of both redounded to the credit of the whole company. If the club deoide to engage in any heavier pieces, Messrs. Weston and Moss should be. given leading parts, as there in a lot in them. ' Wood cock's Little Game' gave evidence of considerable histrionic ability on the part of both the lady and gentlemen players. The life which...

StoaUiavea Farms FURTHER BERRY ESTATE SALES. Tho second Inrge sale of Berry Estate lands was conducted at the Agricul tural Hall, B«rrv, ou Wednesday last by Messrs. Stewart and Morton, the local auctioneers, in conjunction wmi Messrs Bardie and Gonnnn, of Sydney. Mr. Henry Gorman wielded the hammer, and Mr, John, Hay (residuary legatee of the late Mr. David Berry), and Mr. Alex. Hay were in attend ance. There were in all nearly 1000 persons present, and the utmost good feeling prevailed. The bidding; now and again was spirited, but in most cases the old. tenants .?purchased their hold ings. Those who failed to do so are to be provided with farms elsewhere by Mr. Hay. There was at times much cheering as a tenant stepped forward to sign for the purchase of his or her holding, and the sales were effected with evident satisfaction to all parties. Most of the improved dairy farms brought exceedingly goody prices, McDonald's 35-acre farm on the old Bomadorry Road topping the .market at £...

A Disease of Civilisation. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 18 March 1893

A Disease of Civilisation. In the 'North American Review' for December l)r. Henry Smith Williams, Medical Superintendent of the Randall's Islands Hospital, and an authority on diseases of the brain, had an article on on 'General Paresis of the Insane,' which attracted wide and deserved atten tion. We quote its opening paragraph : Of all diseases that menace the race, only a few are absolutely fatal. Indeed, there is .but one common disease that invariably brings its victims speedily to the grave. This most ruthless of maladies ib that terrible form of insanity, technically called general paresis or paretic dementia, and known to the layman as ' softening of the brain.' Its unvarying history entitles it to precedence over consumption, cancer, Bright'* disease ; in short, places it peerless in bad pre-eminence. And as if thiB wore not enough, its malignity is emphasized by the way in which it juggles with its victims before it extinguishes his life. It changes his personality, dethron...

The Dog Act. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 18 March 1893

The Dog Art The Dog' .Act Furth«-Amendment BUI has not found favor with tlie grave philosophers of the Upper House, and has accordingly . lieen- literally kicked down stairs. Members like Mr. Dangar, Mr. Eater,- and the- familiar John Smith, whilst wrongly deeming the bill to be one of class legislation, have stuck close to clas» legislation themselves. They do not want dogs to worry the squatters' sheep, and they are quite right too. But why did it not strike them that the restrictions upon dogs were not likely to be relaxed under the new measure 1 The bill sought to give the Governor power to exempt portions of a district from the operation of the Act, the chief object of its introduction t-eing to ppnnit farmers in certain parts of the South Coast districts, and settlers in other places where there are no squattages, to keep dogs for use on their holdings and for the destruc tion of vermin without the burden of taxation. Captain Charles, too, opposed the liill, he thinking the Go...
