T;, days appointel for the race-meet ing are the 17th and I8th of the present month. Ca these days there will be a very small available police f-rce. It has therefore become a question with the magistrates whether they will grant ex tensions of license? to the publicans who have obtained the approval of the race stewards. The hesitation of the magistrates is commeadable, but on a full consideration of probabilities, we think there can be very little doubt of their arriving at the conclusion that the only way to prevent disorder will be to grant the extension of licenses. If the police force be inefficient, it is evident it will be powerless in sup pressing the illicit sale of spirits. If no licensed booths be permitted, there will be an unlimitel number of unlicensed sellers. This is the alternative to which the magistrates must look. With four licensed booths, a hndful of constables will be able to concentrate their power; with twenty sly grog tonts and drays, they will he helpless...

FOREST CREEK DIGGINGS. 3rd March, 1852. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 11 March 1852

FOREST C1HEIEK DIGGI\GS. (From our Correspondent.) 3rd March, 1S52. Si ScE my last communication, there have been the usual number of arrivals, and a very unusual number of departures, chiefly for Bendigo Creek, where they also, it seems, have a golden gully; if report speaks true, there have been some lucky hits made, and no failures; every hole yet sank has turned out something good; they are from 5 to 12 feet deep. In my last letter I mentioned that holes here, on Forest Creek, yielding 2 or 3 oz. per day, had been sold for a trifle; since then the mania has increased, and I know of cases where parties have not only left their holes, but also cart loads of good stuff picked out for washing, so precipitate has been the flight to the Bendigo Golden Gully. The new successes at Ballarat are well known, and generally talked about here; but there have been few departures com-a p-ored to the numbers who have gone to Bsndigo. Severe punishments are now inflicted on the sly grog sellers. ...
