TOWN PLANNING The British Town Planners' Tour. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 4 May 1914

TOWN PLANNING The British Town Planners' Tour. Mr. Chas. Reade, the organising secretary of the British Town Planners' tour, arrived in Sydney last week, and is busily engaged in making final arrange ments for what can only be regarded as a mission of enlightenment- throughout the Commonwealth. The almost certain decision of the respective State : Governments to contribute toward the actual ex pense of the tour will certainly find ready endorse ment with the people generally. Australia is dis tinctly fortunate at this stage to have the benefit of the knowledge and experience of experts freely given; . 'Firstly, because the preat Commonwealth is in need of town planning; because also the free, open spaces present admirable scope for its com prehensive application on every principle. Secondly, because the subject is one that is essentially demo cratic. By its universal application that section o^ humanity known as 'the masses' stand to benefit more than the other section which, having...

AN 'OFFICIAL' JOURNAL. Mere Title v. Practical Undertaking. WHAT READERS AND ADVERTISERS WANT. President A. W. Anderson, of the N.S.W. Institute of Architects, referred at the last meeting of members to the 'official' journal of the Institute — 'The Salon' — in such candid terms, that considerable surprise must have been occasioned. Certain advertisers, he said, were talking of withdrawing because (1) they con ': sidered 'The Salon' was NOT the 'official' journal of the Institute; (2) that architects were not interested in 'The Salon.' He appealed to architects to correct this impression, because the publisher had to be considered. But isn't an appeal of that character wasted and out of place? In these practical days of 'get there,' merit comes into its own. There is no place for the claim that cannot be endorsed by achievement. There is no hearing for the men who merely say they will do things. 'Make good' is the demand of the age. 'What is' has displaced 'what might have been.' Th...

N.S.W. EXCHANGE AND BALLOTING. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 4 May 1914

N.S.W. EXCHANGE AND BALLOTING. Although the old time-consuming process of balloting for membership has been rejected by up-to-date institutions, it is rigorously applied by the N.S.W. Builders' Exchange. It is argued that the fault is not with the Exchange, but with certain of its members. Under the rules, if there be a single objector to the nominations being taken en globo individual balloting must be carried out, and the good time of busy men wasted. At the last quarterly meeting Mr. F. W. Hart, who should have known better, was the culprit. Consequently, a meeting that could have been got through by two o'clock was delayed till 2.30. Why cannot the Exchange follow the example of. the Master Builders' Association — refer all applicants .for nominations to a committee of investigation and ' lie satisfied with its recommendations?

THE ANNUAL DINNER. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 4 May 1914

THE ANNUAL DINNER. The annual dinner of the N.S.W. Master Builders' Association and Exchange will be held in Sargents' Cafe, Market Street, Sydney, on Monday May 18, at 6.15 p.m. Mr. Thomas Fairweather attended the last meet ing* of the Builders' Exchange looking himself again. He has been generally congratulated on the success of an operation. Kirk White— an identity in N.S.W. building trade circles, died last week. The Builders' Ex change, of which he was a prominent member, adjourned its quarterly meeting as a mark of respect. Kirk White had a personality which he exercised without being aggressive or obtrusive. His candor in all matters connected with the administration of the Exchange was always relished. A good business man and a natural fighter was Kirk White; and he did not surrender until after a great battle against heavy odds.

ARCHITECTS AND BUILDERS. That "Modern" Building Act Apparently to apply to Sydney City only. The Reasoning of the "Little Sydneysiders" in the Institute of Architects. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 4 May 1914

ARCHITECTS AND BUILDERS. That 'Modern' Building Act Apparently to apply to Sydney City only. The Reasoning of the 'Little Sydneysiders' in the Institute of Architects. The N.S.W. Government of the day, almost ' within the memory of the oldest inhabitant, has promised to pass 'a! modern building Act.' But it has gone out of office, bided its time, and returned to office; and still neglected its promise. Between times — if not at all times — various pro fessional institutions, citizens' committees, and the press of every shade of political belief — 'official organs' and common, ordinary journals included- — have more or less pestered the administrations hf the times. But all to no effect, bevond.nf course, the consistently-given, compromising promise. ' ?' ? ..-.'' ? . Whether the passing of .the measure was obr structed by the 'brick ring,' the 'contractors' combine' — of which Minister Griffith speaks — the boodler, or the plain apathy and ignorance of the administrations of the tin...
