SUNSHINE AND SUNLIGHT [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 27 September 1924

SUNSHINE AND SUNLIGHT "What's in a name?" has been an occasional query. There is much in deed in certain namcs, particularly in those that are symbolic of the best features of the world; names that engender brightness and captivate the imagination. Perchance that is why Lord Leverhulme, the present British millionaire, when he was preparing to ascend the ladder of success, bap: tised the scene of his operations "Port Sunlight." What better appellation could there have been to presage the immensity of the financial reward which has followed his career, and the huge benefit which have accrued to hundreds of thousands of British workmen ? The very contemplation of the name is refreshing; is calcula t-d to inspire hope, to banish forebod in , and to give courage. It is akin to an incentive-or som!ething good to come. So it is certainly grati: fying to know that our district, which is advancing in the van of general progress so quickly and safely, was baptised with a name synonymous with...

POULTRY NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 27 September 1924

POULTRY NOTES. By "Tight Feather." This is the time of the year a con si(lerable proportion of the poultry keeper's attention is occupied with hatching. Even to the veriest no. vice it is quite evident that before chicks can be had they must be in cubated, either under a hen or in a machine. This is a process lasting 21 days, but if the eggs are very fresh the chicks will often appear on the 19th or 20th day. If the eggs are, however, ratheri stale, the chicks may not hatch out until a day or two later. Eggs can be incubated under a hen or in an incubator. In artificial hatching it is most ne cessary that the incubator, before being used, should he thoroughly over hauled, especially if it be a tank ma chine. The tank must he tested for leaks, otherwise when the moisture runs out of the ventilation holes the user will he haunted by the fear that the tank leaks. and wonders if it will see the hatch out. To do this empty the tank, and wipe the tube through which it is filled; fill your...

BRAYBROOK PROGRESS ASSOCIATION [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 27 September 1924

BRAYBROOK PROGRESS ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the Bray brook Progress Association was held on Monday evening. Considering the inclement weather there was a fair attendance of members, and some very pointed discussions took place over the business, which was a very lengthy one. Two members drew the attention of the meeting to two little girls, who had to scatter off Ballarat road th'rough the eTratic movements of motor cars. These two little girls narrowly missed being run down. There will be a time when a serious accident will occur on the road, when someone will have to take the re sponsibility. We have a right to use the roadway until some provision is made for people to keep off the roads. The secretary mentioned that he had twice drawn the attention of the coun cil to the danger of people walking on the roadway, a.nd the council had instructed that the footpath he put in proper order. He also mentioned that complaints are still being made about Melon street bridge. Nothi...

HEALTHY FRUIT TREES Necessity for Spraying [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 27 September 1924

HEALTHY FRUIT TREES Necessity for Spraying While we are confidentially advised that "an apple a lday keeps the doctor away," and just its strenuously in structedl to "eat more fruit," very few of those who incline to these axioms think for a moment of the previous history of that particular fruit which is destined to bankrupt the medical profession. I-low few of us, when we observe the cheery ])ago surrepti tiously expectorate upon ia "specky" apple and vigorously rub it upon his coat sleeve, realise that those black specks are not dirt, but a fungoid growth sent by an all-wise providence to hamper the growth of the fruit and spoil its flavour and appearance, and that the operation described above is simply a pure waste of Grecian saliva and energy. The modern orchardist has more than his fair share of difficulties. In addition to the usual run of droughts, floods and frosts, he has to combat a number of separate and individual pests, such as aphis, black spot, curly leaf, borer, et...

ITEMS OF INTEREST. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 27 September 1924

ITEMS OF INTEREST. -0- The marvellous and rapid strides made by wireless were demonstrated on Thursday evening in Clarke Street, Sunshine, where, through the medium of Mr .J. H. H. Jackson's radio and aerial outfit, " 2 FC Sydney " (Far mer's broad-casting service) was on tap. Out in the street facing Mr Jackson's residence, and up and down Clarke-street for some distance, could he heard a choir of a thousand voices singing in the Sydney Town Hall. Standing upon the mnarble steps of the " Advocate " ofllice our staff was be beguiled also with the strains of ' Iose of My Heart," sung very nicely by Mr Jockell, and transmnitsed by " 3 AR AMelb." A number of listeners were greatly impressed. Matters are progressing in reference to the building of the new hall, and excavations are now being made for the concrete foundations of the struc ture, which when completed will be a great convenience to the town, which has been handicapped by the want of a suitable hall for social functions. Mess...

SHOPS FOR SUNSHINE [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 27 September 1924

SHOPS FOR SUNSHINE There are now approaching conl pletion in HaInpshire Road four large shlopt, which are being equipped with modern shop fronts, and being roomy places with accommodation up-stairs will prove a valuable addit ozi to the shopping area of the townshipl As all the shops the hshop in the same thor ough-fare have been brought up to date with new p)late glass aind tilp facades the town looks quite smart and cityfied. Sunshine, on the city fringe, has a mixed sort of "rus in urbe" air about it, but trade is gradually taking on the city systems, and our tradesmen are fully aware that with the growth of the population keener business methods will have to be adopted. In addition to Mr. M'Kay's Hamp shire House shops t~here are two shops in,. course of completion across the line.

SUNSHINE ESTATE. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 27 September 1924

SUNSHINE ESTATE. One "of the nboticeable fe tures i connection with the sub-divisional sale of Sunshine Estate is the estalishnlent of an octagon shaped park of ten acre which in future may be used ras recreation ground, for which it is en inently iSuited. • This step in the right direction would not be expected from ordinary subdivision traders, but the fact that Mr. 11. V. McKay is the vendor accounts for the high public spirit shown in this instance, and it is by no means the first or greatest gift to the public from the same beneficenlt quarter. Sunshine Estate consists of 220 allotments, each having a 50 feet frontage, and the vendor at his own cost will metal roads, lay water Iairis and extend electric light cables as re quired by honme builders, so that the council andl householders have onrly to make footpatihs. One excellentt feature .is that the whole area has been sur. vcyed and the blocks laid out with ia view in the future of providing drain. age and sewerage upon the m...
