Clayton. Methodist Sunday-School Anniversary. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 5 December 1914

Clayton. Methodist Sunday-school Anniversary. Anniversary services in con nection with the above were held on Sunday last. Mr Lonsdale, who conducted three services, made them very interesting and attractive by his practical and at times humorous method of putting things, and there were large at tendances throughout the day. The children sang selected hymns, under the conductorship of Mr J. Baker, in a very pleasing manner, assisted by an orchestra, and with Miss McPherson at the organ. On Monday evening the time honoured tea meeting was held and evidently retains its popularity, as the tables were well filled with guests whose appetites were very keen. Afterwards a public meeting was held, the church being crowded to the doors, and after the Rev W. E. Secomb (superintendent minister) had conducted the opening exer cises he handed over the meeting to the charge of Mr J. Marriott (superintendent). The children rendered the following program in a very entertaining manner, elict ing he...

Clayton Church of England. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 5 December 1914

Clayton Church of Englaid. The annual tea meeting in con nection with All Saints' Church, Clayton, was held on Wednesday evening, 25th ult., in the Tennis Hall and was well attended, though not quite so largely as in former years, owing to counter attractions. The tables were presided over by Mrs Atkinson, the Misses Fisher (2', Cooper (2), Colwell, Furphy, and Dixon. A concert was afterwards held and was well attended, the pro gram being furnished by Mrs Dungey and party, of Oakleigh, and its merit may be estimated by the fact that almost every number was encored. Cr Forster acted as chairman with his usual cordiality. Following were the items ren dered:- Overture, Mrs Castle song, Go to Sea, Mr Bienvenu (en :ored) ; song, The Valley of Laughter (encore, You'd Better Ask Me), Miss McIntosh ; s6ng, The King's Fifteen, Mr H. Glen Waverley Sports. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 5 December 1914

Glen Waverley Sports. A meeting of the Glen Waverley Athletic Club took place on Saturday last in the local Mec hanics' Institute, about 20 mem bers being present. The meeting was called for the purpose of con sidering the question of holding the annual sports or otherwise. Considering the disturbed state of the country through the drought and the war it was the opinion of several local residents that it would not be advisable to have sports this season, while others as strongly thought It would, after the previous successful years, be a mistake to forego them. The chairman (Mr Fear) sup ported the advisability of holding sports, and suggested that half of the profits, if any, be given to the patriotic fund, as the club was financially in a good position, having a balance of over £59. The secretary (Mr Law) ex plained at length'thereasonlsports were first mooted by the Mechanics' committee, which were for im proving the recreation ground and paying off the . mortgage. The only incom...

Anniversary Celebration. STH. OAKLEIGH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 12 December 1914

Anniversary Celebration. STU. OA eLEmoH CONGRZEGATIONAL CHURCH. Special services in celebration of the anniversary of the above were held oi Sunday last and were very successful. Mr W. H. Hunt con ducted the morning service and gave a fine address. In the afternoon the Rev D. J. Hennessey held the close attention of all present while he spoke on the text, "The whole world travaileth in pain together." He dwelt on the characteristics of the mineral, vegetable and animal worlds, aind then took his hearers back to the time when the Roman legions conquered the then know world, enslaving the su'ojugated people, whose pain and agony of mind was so great that God sent a deliverer. So to-day the modern world groaned and suffered at the cruel hand of the German Em peror, who sought to bring on them the iron heel of a cruel despotism. The preacher appealed to all to do their best for the betterment of ilurninity, riven and distressed by ildividual and national wronrg doing, and so usher in th...
