KAINIT FOR DESTROYING WIRE WORMS. San Francisco; California. To The Uural Californian '. We have read your article in your issue of January, page 15, entitled " Wire Worms. We read aft follows :— We have only by use. of a crow bar or iron rod to make a. hole down to the Jnsecis, turn in the liquid, and quickly and closetv stop, the hole with clay as before.; This seems to be a very roundabout . way of fighting fbhis pest, and possibly even a dangerous one, so far as the crops are concerned. FRUITS AND FERTILIZERS. Continued from last week's issue. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 5 June 1896

FRUITS A^D FERTILIZERS. From the Rural Californian. Continued from last week's issue. In fruit growing, it is of the first importance to keep the orchard in a good healthy condition. The omis sions of one j ear cannot be made up by lavish attention the next. There is but one safe method, and that is to make provision for the proper health and nourishment of trees or vines for each successive growing season; in fact the whole problem is largely a matter of nourishment or fertilization. With proper and adequate food supplies, the matter of health and power of resist ance of disease becomes a secondary consideration. This proper and ade quate food supply has been made the subject of innumerable written opinions from hosts of experts of various kinds, and the distinguishing characteristic of this literature seems to be an inability to agree on anything of practical utility. It is now pretty generally understood that orchards and vineyards must be fertilized, but there still remains the ...

EUROPEAN AND GENERAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 5 June 1896

EUROPEAN AND GENERAL NEWS. Colonel Napier, with 300 troops, has inflicted, another defeat on the Matabeles, 1500 strong. Mr. Cecil Rhodes has undertaken that the Bri tish South African Company shall compensate settlers for the losses in which they are involved. He is deter mined, at all costs, to see the country peacefully settled by Europeans. Further evidence is said to have been discovered of to the complicity of the Eight Hon. Cecil Rhodes in the Transvaal invasion. It is stated that be supported Dr. Jameson's raid be cause President Kruger was arranging for an anti-English alliance, and Mr. Rhodes desired the destruction of the Hollander-German cabal, which had the reins of power. The "Reform" prisoners, except two, who refused to sign the petition for pardon, and the leaders, have been released from prison. The fines in flicted will be exacted in full. The clemency of President Ivruger and his Executive has given universal satisfac tion throughout South Africa. It has also lia...

THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 5 June 1896

THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY. :u: The result of the visit of Mr. A. J. Bonduranfc, the Victorian tobacco ex pert, to Mildura, as reported in the Mild ura papers, should be watched with iuterest by Eenmark settlers. If the conditions of the climate and soil of Mildura are favorable for growing 1 the redolent weed, it seems hardly pos sible that those of Benmark should be otherwise. Mr. Bondurant, however, in the course of his lecture delivered under the auspices of the Mildura Horticultural Society last week, said that an equal amount, of care, such as that evinced by the orchard trees and vines of the settlement, would make a success of tobacco growing:, provided the conditions of soM and climate were favorable. He, of course, could not speak positively about either as yet, but he could at !least say that hie had so far failed to detect any obstacle or difficulty in the natural conditions The soil generally, so far as a casual inspection went, appeared to be highly suitable for the industry...

The pioneer. FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1896. TOWN WATER SUPPLY FOR RENMARK [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 5 June 1896

touter. FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1896. TOWN WATER SUPPLY FOB REN MASK The petition of the owners and occupiers of Benmark township allotments has at last borne fruit. The Treasurer, the Hon. F. W. Holder, acting as Commissioner of Public Works, during the absence of the Hon. J. G. Jenkins, has signed the minute ordering the proclamation of the whole town area as a Water District under the terms of the Water .Conservation Act, 1889, and the Con servator of Water has recommended the Government to grant a loan to lay pipes, purchase and erect a boiler, arid move the pump and engine now in use —the amount estimated that will be required being £1100. The Renmark Local Progress Committee has done good work in'carrying bn this negotia tion to a. successful issue, and the matter now, we believe, rests in the hands of the three trustees nominated in the petition, and two others yet to be appointed by the Government. As soon as the official notification of the, proclamation is to hand, the loan, rer c...

LOCAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 5 June 1896

LOCAL NEWS . As will be seen by a report in ano ther column the Supreme Court Case, debenture holders v. liquidators of Chaffey Bros. Ltd., was decided on Monday last, the Chief Justice giving judgment for the former. The Minister of Agriculture has in formed the deputation, which waited upon hiui recently asking that tlie res trictions on the sale of infested fruit be removed, thc,t he cannot comply with the request of the memorialists. This will calm one anxiety of Ren mark settlers. The share boom is now at its height in the city. Opposite the Exchange the footpath is thronged by dealers and brokers. Two policemen are en gaged during the busiuess hours of the day endeavoring to keep the thorough fare clear. Even then it is not easy to get past if one is in a hurry. The Hon. F. W. Holder seems to desire to keep the hotel question in abeyance till everything is satisfac torily settled, so that no one but the nominee of the Progress Committee shall get the licence, and the underta k...
