Ticks and Redwater. TO THE EDITOR "S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 16 June 1896

Ticks and Redwater. TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.'' Sir, — Having passed a few years in the Northern Territory, I should like to back up a statement made by Mr. Campbell, of the Elsie Station, to the effect that, at certain seasons, both cattle and horses are infected with ticks without fatal results. From Port Darwin to the Victoria River, a distance of 400 miles, all kinds of stock are troubled with ticks for several months every year, but they do not materially affect the con dition of cattle or horses nor prove fatal to either. But the Northern Territory redwater is a different and much more serious matter. Thousands of cattle die of redwater before they are ever troubled with ticks. In over landing from Queensland to the Vic toria River with 1500 head of cattle, in 1884, I was fortunate in not losing any from redwater, but some other drovers had terrible smashes amongst their cattle in going over the same ground a few weeks later. One man bound for Western Australia dro...

Dipping for Tick. RE CATTLE TICK. TO THE EDITOR "S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 16 June 1896

Dipping for Tick. RE CATTLE TICK. TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir, — By the courtesy of Messrs. Quibell Bros., sheep dip manu facturers, Newark, England, for whom we act as agents, we are informed that on the 13th March last, they wrote to Mr. M. Francis, Veterinarian, State Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, Department of Veterinary Science, College Station P.O., Texas, TJ.S.A , as to the method of dipping cattle in Texas, where they appear to have had considerable practical experience with the par ticular tick that is now causing such ravages amongst Queensland cattle, and as the following extracts from Mr. Francis' reply letter will doubtless prove' of wide interest, we beg your insertion of same : — [copy.] ' Ticks have become such a curse in this country that we have been com pelled to devise some means for their destruction. After various unsuccess ful attempts in this direction, we have adopted the dipping process with very gratifying results. We use a l...

Proposed Woolgrowers Protection Bill. TO THE EDITOR "S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 16 June 1896

Proposed Woolgrowers Protection Bill. TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir, — Several of your correspondents have lately been writing on the subject of direlections of agents, and the subject is again brought into prominence by the following tele gram appearing in to-day's issue of the ' Sydney Morning Herald : ' — 'Warren, Saturday. — An import ant meeting of the district wool growers was held here to-day to consider the question of endeavouring to impress on Parliament the necessity of introducing such legislation as would protect consignors' sale results in the event of financial misfortune overtaking the agents. About 50 representative selectors and pas toralists were present, and eventually the following resolution was carried : — ' That this meeting desires to bring before the member for the district the necessity for attempting to promote such legislation as will protect the woolgrowers and wool consignors, by trast account or otherwise, of any produce forwarded by coun...

Dentistry. DO YOU NEED TEETH? [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 16 June 1896

Dentistry. DO YOU NEED TEETH ? Sometimes people come in from the country to get their mouths looked to (dentally) and fall into the hana^-*a quacks. Its a horrible experience-^ If you come to Sydney and want a \ cood dentist,, call at this office first and we'll tell you one. Failing that, go to Mr. A. J. Cottee, 287 Elizabeth street. He's a gentleman and a den tist, and you can't want more than that. So if you fall among thieves, don't call me bad names, see ! Sneezes are like misforbunes — they seldom come singly. A crowded street car is the place to see men stand up for woman's rights. ' What did the doctor do for your complaint 1 ' ' Told me the name of it.' Sitter (jocosely) : 'I suppose you want me to look pleasant 1 ' Artist : ' Unless you prefer a per fect likeness.'

The Sheepbreeders' Association. A COMPENDIUM OF THE FORTHCOMING SHOW. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 16 June 1896

The Sheepbreeders' Association. A COMPENDIUM OF THE FORTHCOMING SHOW. Large bodies must, perforce, move slowly, and the Sheepbreeders' Association, being a very large body, is moving very slowly, but very surely, towards an ultimate result, which will be success. Australia is the first sheep country in the world, not even barring that wonderful country, America ; and, being first, why should it not have the first and best sheep show in che world 1 Level headed men have seen that this can be done, and, with the aid of the pastoralists, they will soon attain that goal. To fully realise the extent and popularity of this association a glimpse at the prize list is all that is required. The manner in which the different Sydney firms have shown their practical sympathy is very gratifying to the officers and members of the association. The list is so numerous that we could not numerate them in a paragraph, but the following are a few of the principal trophies : — Messrs. Geo. Mackenzie and ...

A New Diving Bell. A MARVELLOUS SUB-MARINE ADVANCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 16 June 1896

A New Diving Bell. I A MARVELLOUS SUB-MARINE 1 ADVANCE. I (By Our Special Reporter.) When the editor sent me to examine a new diving machine in Sydney Har bour last Tuesday, I felt bad ! It was jj a damp, wet day and no sort of an | occasion for a marine razzle-dazzle, j But mine not to reason why ; mine | not to make a reply ; mine but to do or die, etc., etc. We went off on the little steamer ' Florrie Ellison' with as jovial a crowd as the heart of man (could desire. Most men are nice and good and affable, if you give them I something and don't want anything [from them. I'm that way myself! .We steamed down to Bradley's Head land took aboard a lot of chunks of f«rock, and then we steered to Rose /Bay where a white schooner was lying ?at anchor in 17 fathoms of water. I Alongside of the schooner was a big, .''? ugly-looking apparatus, like a red buoy | of vast dimensions. That was the ) diving bell ! It looked like a big, ' red rolling machine, about 7 feet ; across. But inside th...

Improvement of British Meat. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 16 June 1896

Improvement of British Meat. The 'Caterer' says: 'British Meat is decidedly improving in quality, and much of this improve ment may be traced to the cattle shows. It is found that there has been a gain of over 2501b on the average bullock under two years old since the show of 1880, while the average weight of beasts under four years has gained by nearly 1601b. Sheep have also gained in weight, and are brought to maturity much earlier. There is an equal improve ment with pigs. Sych gain is not merely a matter of fat and bone, for as a fact, carcases to-day have a higher percentage of superior-class meat than was the case fourteen years ago.''

Is the rebate allowed on live stock carried to chilling and freezing depots, as published in the live stock rate sheet, confined to chilled and frozen meat, the produce of such live stock, carried for export beyond Australasia ; if so, is this intended as a bonus on frozen meat exported from this colony beyond Australasia 1 3.
