The Reaper Thresher. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 15 January 1915

. The Reaper Thresher. A demonstration of the new1 Nicholson & o. crrow reaper-thresh er wa3 given on the farm of Mr R. Sinclair at St. Albans. Amongst those present were the Minister for Customs (Mr Tuidor), Mr Fenton, M.H.R.. and the ComptroIIer general of Customs, (Mr Stephen Mills). The special advantages claimed for this machine are that it will cut a loft swarth with the same team required for the ordinary harves ter, which would only cut half that' width; that there is no side-draft, and that the machine will work under conditions in which the or dinary harvester could not be em ployed. The conditions when the demon stration took place were certainly unfavorable, for with the inter-I mittent showers the crop wasl tough and stringy. However, they cutting was clean, and the thresh ing was excellent. The essential differences of the reaper-thresher and the harvester consist in the use of a knife behind the comb, such as that employed in a binder, and also in the use of t...

Farming Implements. HARROW DETACHMENT TO DRILL. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 22 January 1915

Farming Implements. HARROW DETACHMENT TO DRILL. Farmers appreciate the use of the drii for seed sowing, but the ne cessity for subsequently harrowing and covering the grain still re mains. M any attempts have been madce to overcome the difficulty, such as drag-chains and following harrows behind the hoes, but such contrivances were not altogether s.tistactory. Mr Walter Deutscher, of Murtoa. who is said to be a mechanical genius, has now invented and patented a new harrow attachment, which is worked with the seed sower. A representative of the " Stan dard," who saw the contrivance at work oin Mr T. M. Deutscher's farm, writes :-It was an ordinarv M'Cormick drill and was drawn by the usual .four-horse team in a fallow paddock, the driver stand ing comfortably on the footboard, and the seed was dropped and al most instantly covered over uni - A A -- -------- :__ -. ._..... tioni of the attachment showeld that it consisted of a double ro; ofu pivot pits or harrow teeth on bars! arranig...

The vigorous protests that h~ve 'een made by residents on the Mil dura line since the curtailment of the train services to and from Mil dura have had a tangible result. It was arnlounced officially on iThurscay that commencing Satur day, an additional train would be run on Saturdays to connect at Castlemaine with the Melbourne to Bendigo express. It will, in fact, be a continuation of the present S.10 p.m. train from Castlemaine to Donald, which is run in conaection i ith the Bendigo express, and will i reach Mildura at 8.30 a m. on Sun day), returning again at 8 a.m. on SMonday, and reaching Melbourne at 10-.5 P.m. the same day. Some idea of the extent of the failure of the harvest just gathered in Victoria can be obtained by figures supplied by the Railway I Commissioners relating to traffic in wheat. Figures showing the num ber of trucks and the quantity of wheat loaded daily since 2rnd Janu ary, compared with the correspond ing period of last year, disclose that for the eleven w...

Drought Lessons. A FARMER'S OPINION. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 22 January 1915

Drought Lessons. A FARMER'S OPINION. " Drou.'.t 1 ?:-s.s t'" was the subject l M:,:iCetl. it a recent n;2tingi of t:,_ Cuorale branch of the Agricultural Bureau in South Aus~traia by 3r s. S. Kinsley (s-ys the Adeia:ie "Chronicle"). One point emphasised by the drought, he said, was the necessity for every farmer having a side line or two to provide an income when :-h" 't "ro, ": failed. W hat - . : ...:. ?I"zya anid initiative must be behind it. In times of stress farmers w.re too ready to seek help from financiers which often resulted in disaster; whereas gocd management and economy in times of plenty would in many iustances enable them to tide over bad seasons. Mr Kingsley urged members ta conserve fodder. Cocky chaff should be saved, but where the campIete harvester was used and the cocky chaff lost, but cost of labor.saved, this money should be set aside as a reserve fund for the purchase of hay. Fodder could also be conserved by taking o~f portion ol the crop with the binder an...

Wheat Engorgement. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 22 January 1915

Wheat Engorgement. The veterinary officers of the New South Wales Department of Agriculture have been giving in formation upon the treatment of borses which have gorged them selves on wheat. Many valuable draught horses die frora this cause, and if any do eventually recover they are thrown out of work for a considerable time. Usually the horse is found eating the wheat and when signs of abdominal pain are noticed there is little doub't as to their cause. The -intensity of pain is influenced bvy-(a) The amount of wheat eaten: (b) work ing the animal directly after it has gorged itself; (c) a predisposition of certain animals to gastric de xangements. The symptoms may be but slight, the animal being dull, with no appetite and slaggish at his work. The more serisus; cases set in very suddenly. Tie i horse becomes restless, pams at the: ground, looks round at its flank, and constantlv kicks at the a domen. As the pa:n :s maore severe the animal throws i:self about and rolls on the groun...
