HATS OFF [Newspaper Article] — Centralian Advocate — 6 September 1947

HATS OFF — ;u: — To Mr. P. F. Muldoon who runs our modern, if modest, jail in a most proficient manner, and takes the drabness from these grim buildings by supplying them color through the medium of attractive gardens and gives the jail some civic pride. Recently this paper had the op portunity of inspecting the Alice Springs jail, purely as a spectator. It was a most enlightening visit. The approach to the jail has a well laid out garden, and the grounds surrounding the buildings are kept most meticulously clean. Inside those towering walls, you see gardens laid out in various sections of the jail, you see a vegetable garden that would be the envy of anyone, with every type of vegetable in season. Flower gardens with the most amazing coloring, then, after marvelling at the wonderful work done in keeping these gardens so healthy, you come across beds of strawberry plants, yes, wFth large ripe strawberries galore. All these gardens could not be kept in such magnificent order by sheer...

UNEXPECTED ANSWER [Newspaper Article] — Centralian Advocate — 6 September 1947

UNEXPECTED ANSWER Jimmy, who had been climbing trees, came in for the second time within a week with his trousers torn. 'This time you can go up stairs and mend them yourself !' ordered the harrassed mother. Sometime later she went up stairs to see how he was getting along. She found the trousers there, but no Jimmy. Puzzled, she came downstairs, still looking for Jimmy. She noticed, as she passed, that the cellar door, usually shut, was open. She went to the door and called down sharply, 'Are you running round down thei'o without your trousers on ?' The reply came in a stern and heavy masculine voice : 'No, madam, I'm reading the gas lieter.'
