NEW ZEALAND. AUCKLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 15 February 1866

NEW ZEALAND. AUCKLAND. (FROM THIE SOUTIIER CROSS, JnA. 26.) DESTRUCTIVE COFFLAnRATIOx.-A des tructive conflagration occurred last night, about 11 o'clock, in Hobson-street, com mencingin two new two-storey shops, er ecc~e for Mr. M'Clusky, engineer. The dis covery of the existence of the fire appears to have been made by a person who was return ing homeward from the Great World Cir uens, and passing by the shops at a quarter to eleven p.m., when he detected flames is suing from underneath the flooring. He at once gave the alarm by ringing the Hobson street fire-bell. Before any steps could be taken to prevent the flames spreading, the whole of the lower portion of the shops was in a blaze, and the inhabitants of the adjoin ing houses on each side, who were roused from their beds on the alarm being given, had little time left to put on a few articles of clothing and leave their homes before their houses were also ignited. By the time the fire had gained entire possession of the two s...

MISCELLANEOUS EXTRACTS [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 15 February 1866

MISCELLANEOUS EXTRACTS We take tho following, on the state of af fairs in this colony, from the Sydney lforn ing Herald of the 6tt h inst :-"The result of the recent election in Victoria affords a sig nal illustration of the excessive representa. tion given to a majority by our present sys tern of elections. The Ministerial parsy, has, no doubt, a majority in the country-a large majority-but it has obtained a represen:a. tion far in excess of its proportion. The mi nority, weak in the couutry, is much weaker still in the Legislature; and to this extent the Assembly fails to be a fair representa tion of the sentiments of the country. It may be said that, as the Ministerial policy has the sanction of a large majority, it does not matter as to the exact number of that majority. But it does matter, because the Parliament may last for several years, and have to deal with many other cuestions be sides those which were mooted at the gene ral election. Moreover it creates a feeling of injus...
