WASTED LAND [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1907
WASTED LAND By FranK . H . Stveet . More ground . This is the cry of many small farmers . If I had more ground I could do well ; but as it is 1 can barely make a living . I have land for only half as much wheat as I want , half as much corn , half as many potatoes ; and the looking after of the small crops takes a good deal more time in proportion , than larger ones would . No , no ! To get ahead a man needs as much land as he can manage . True . But how often does he manage all the land he has ? There are some farms of course , where the fences and walks and field corners are clean , where scarcely a weed is allowed to ripen seed , and where bushes and briers are kept in their proper places . But to one such farm how many of the other kind do we know , where , it-cultivating the plow has to be swung three or four furrows away from the wall on account of encroaching alders and hazelnut bushes and green briers , and where the corners of fields can hardly be seen for invading growth ?...

&~ ^ - ^ By ^ IrW ^ HELEN PRANCESTIUNTINOTON B ^^ IP ^ H ELEN P RANCES TIUNTINGTON The far-reaching fragrance of Italian violets drifted abroad on the damp February air from the fine old Mortimer garden where Miss Lucias careful ingenuity- kept , flowera blooming throughout the long , sharp winter when all the rest of the Northern worldwas gray with frost . The two men riding down the broad sodden road that led past the garden looked instinctively toward the big white house behind the cedar hedge . Isnt a wonder that Miss Lucia never married 1 said Bernard Gray , the younger of the two men , whose blithe love affair had put him in a sympathetic mood toward the world at large . She certainly was not intended for an old maid . I have always admired Miss Lucia greatly , the other man answered . She is a fine , fu [ l measured woman who would doubtless make a model wife and mother . Yet here she is wasting her charm and goodness on an exacting old aunt , who doesnt deserve h...

LETTERS FROM MRS . GOODWILL TO HER FRIEND BERTHA . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 February 1907
LETTERS FROM MRS . GOODWILL TO HER FRIEND BERTHA . HOME , January 1 st , 1907 . My dear friend Bertha : New Years , day seems a peculiarly appropriate time to- extend to you my sincere good wishes , and express my pleasure in the news which your last letter contained . It is always a joy to feel we have helped a friend ; and in this case I have an added cause for thankfulness , in that I did not allow a feeling of false pride to keep me from inviting you to visit me last summer . You see I : knew you were accustomed to a life of comparative luxury , even though it was in a boarding house , while our Tiome is very plain , and our living extremely simple . I had not seen you for years , and I feared you might not enjoy our quiet life . After weighing the pros and cons of the case , my affections won ; I did so want to see you , I determined , before youi-ame , that we . would simpl y welcome you to our home and life wluch is the liest we can afford , and also to make no apology for th...

Deffgfi ffor Comfortable Homes By Geo . S . Kinsley . Architect A Practical House A Practical House . A practical arrangement of a house has a good deal to do with its desirability as a . home , therefore it behooves us to plan our houses in such a manner that they will be comfortable and convenient . It will save our women folks many steps and worries , and add to our enjoyment . I believe the plan of the house shown herewith is a very . practical one ; fdr the reason of its compactness and general convenience . Entering the house through a vestibule , to the reception hall , one can - go directly to any room in the house without passing through • another , a convenience which makes this plan desirable .
