. The French Draft Horses . . The breeders of the various French horses should band together and endeavor to push them to the front . No one who has tried crosses of these stallions upon our common mares has ever been disappointed . In fact , they so strongly transmit their excellent characteristics upon their offspring as to render the half breeds nearly equal to the pure breeds in most respects . What is now iu order is for the breeders to agree among themselves on some plan of pedigrees , in order that the best families may be perpetuated . We have no intention of taking any part in the controversies that have taken place regarding the locations from whence they come ,, as the breeders understand such matters well , and do not willingly accept advice upon the subject , but we do venture to say that the people are interested in the further importation of the French horses , and will purchase them if they are not bewildered and confused by conflicting claims of superiority on the p...

Feeding Concentrated Food . As a rule , the poultry is given too much concentrated food and not enough of that which is bulky . If poultrymen will consider this fact they will get more eggs and have less difficulty with diseases . It may not be known that there is as much impropriety in feeding concentrated food exclusively to fowls as . to cows or horses . All animals and birds require bulky food , and the hens will show by their actions , if given the opportunity , that they are no exception to the rule . And while the coarse or bulky food is desirable it is also cheaper than that which is concentrated . If any of our readers will cut clover into short lengths they will find that the fowls will eat it , or if an armful be placed irithe yard it will be carefully picked over . A head of cabbage placed in the poultry yard will be eaten down to the stalk , without even the preparation of chopping it up . Clover hay may also be steeped in water , if finely cut , and mixed with the soft...

APIARY . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 6 March 1886

APIARY . Does Bee-Keeping Pay ? It depends upon the colonies , their strength , the pasture and the management . Prom fifty to 100 pounds of extracted honey may be taken from hives under favorable conditions . This is equiv alent to from $ 5 to $ 20 per hive , and may be considered clear gain so far as cost of material for production is concerned . Bees , to produce well , however , need assistance . There is quite an amount of work for the bee-keeper to perform . They must be stimulated to brood rearing , and should be supplied with empty combs until they have filled the hive . By supplying surplus boxes they can be kept busily at work until the entire season of work is over . To keep bees and give them no care or attention except to deprive them of honey is to lose much valuable time that should be utilized . Injuries From Bee Stings . Bees know strangers , detecting them by the sense of smell . Certain odors are repugnant to them , and they will become resentful on its approach ....
