Fins , Feathers and Honey Bees [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 26 March 1896

Fins , Feathers and Honey Bees ANEW FACTORY .. ONE who has never given the subject , thought has no idea of the vastness of the poultry industry of this countryeven the egg part of it is immense when considered in all its beatings . We are led to write the above from the fact that the Iowa egg packers have recently decided they will no longer pay . ( % cents per pound for egg case fillers when the value is only 3 % cents . They will not pay the exorbitant prices any longer than it takes to build a factory or to have one moved into the state or until the executive committee appointed contracts with some responsible concern to furnish the required • amount of fillers needed / A large stock company has been formed • and the parties who subscribed for stock are the members of the Iowa Wholesale Egg and Butter Dealers Association , who say they are oppressed by the Standard Strawboard and Filler Company . The executive committee . was given power to proceed at once to organize and file p...

DOES IT PAY TO RAISE BROILERS . ? [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 26 March 1896

DOES IT PAY TO RAISE BROILERS . ? T HIS has entered the minds of many who are in hard circumstances and wish to find a more successful business to follow . In answering this we will have to say It depends upon who asks the question . I shall make a rough calculation of the business as could be carried on by one who is energetic and has some experience in the business . We shall suppose him to commence the first of October and continue through the hatching season ( about twenty-four weeks ) , with six 200-egg size incubators . He will hatch eight hatches during the season . From all six machines he ought to get at least 900 chicks which by good care will live to be broilers , then from the eight hatches he would have over 7 , 000 chicks . By selling them in a good market 30 cents a piece would be a low price . This would give him $ 2 , 100 . The cost of the eggs to hatch them from would , at 20 cents a dozen , amount to $ 160 . The cost to feed a chick till it weighs 2 lbs . has been...

SAYS "IT'S WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD . " [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 26 March 1896

SAYS ITS WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD . Wesley , Texas , Feb . 23 , 1895 . Esteemed Doctor : —It is , indeed , with joy that I report what , your medicine has accomplished for us . It is simply worth its weight in gold . My wife had suffered for several years with nervousness , so much so that at times she was unable to perform her household duties . She had no appetite , and was also troubled with rheumatism . Then luckily as chance would have it , we received a copy of your paper The Surprise . After reading it we felt confidence in you and ordered a box of your Vitalizer . The result is that my wife is now well . Previous to taking your , medicine , we had tried a great many things , but to no purpose . She had x hardly used one bottle of the Vitalizer before she felt relief and her improvement continued until she was cured . We would now never think of being without your medicine in the house as a family remedy . We get our supply from your agent at Welcome , Texas . Yours respectfu...

AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE . '"¦¦ " [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 26 March 1896

AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE . ¦¦ AN importabt conference was held in Washington city on the 19 th of . March between the Republican bimetallist senators and a large number of manufacturers , principally from Pennsylvania . The object was to come to an understanding between the bimetallists and protectionists . The manufacturing interests are learning what the agriculturists have known for some time ; that the hard times ;; under which w so much due to the tariff , as to , the financial , question , ! and thfat . pros-r perity can only be restored through the restoration of silver . President Dornan > of the Manufacturers Club of Philadelphia , for example ,. expressed the opinion that the tariff duties could not be made high enough to protect American manufacturers if the country remained oh a gold basis . ; James Dobson , anextensive manufacturer , spoke unqualifiedly for free , coinage-. Henry A ,. Frye , of Philadelphia , another extensive manufacturer , said that the soon...

. M ^ LITERAR ^ IMMIGRANTS , [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 26 March 1896

. M ^ LITERAR ^ IMMIGRANTS , S OME rule to restrict immigration is inevitable . Sen- ¦ > :. * ator Lodge : proposes that the immigrants be required ; to read arid write five lines of the Constitution of the United States . He has embodied this requirement in a bill which provides in great detail for the test . The immigrant , male or female , young or old , failing to meet this literary test shall not be admitted but shall be returned to the country from which he came at the expense of the steamship or railroad company which brought him . Senator Lodge s plan makes no condition as to a man s pecuniary-ability . He might , as we understand it , be a millionaire but if he could not read and write in any language he would be excluded . , Literary scoundrels , it seems , can come in ; literary paupers are hot barred by this peculiar bill . Senator Lodge argufcs that the educational test is better than a capitation tax or consular certification for -the restriction of immigrat...
