IN its first numbei for the college year the Gni Ivsuukgian desires to extend its heartiest congratulation to the Freshmen on having become students of our college It welcomes them most heartily to out halls of learning , and wishes them the greatest possible success during their course . In order to the full attainment of the latter end , however , in addition to unceasing devotion to regular studies , certain other conditions must be complied with , which it may be fitting to point out at once . A prime condition in the successful pursuit of knowledge is good health . This is so important in college that a disposition to neglect it has frequently resulted in very seiious consequences . The Gettysiiukgian specially urges the new men to engage actively in all manner of athletics , both for their own sakes and that of the college . Again , to anything like a complete , liberal education , the literary and parliamentary drill derived from active membership in some literary society is ...

V . ( n . C . A . _Reception . The most enjoyable as well as most laigely attended Y . M . C . A . reception of recent years for new students was held in Philo hall Friday evening . Neat little programmes were distributed among the new men containing the principal order of exercises for the evening . Almost all the new men were thcie and the attendance of the older students was remarkable . After being called to order by Pres . Stamets , 99 , Shoup , 00 , rendered a Piano Solo . Prayer was offered by Dr . Bikle . The Welcome to College of Pres . McKnight was given in his usual cheery manner and made both new and old men feel that they all had a very large share in our dear old College . The comparison of older students to the regulars in the army and the new men as recruits was especially pleasing . The applause given Prof . Klinger who spoke next , giving an excellent talk showed the warm place he holds in the hearts of the boys . The first part of the programme closed with a Piano...

ATHliETIC NEWS . L . A . _WltGLK _, oo , Reporter . It gladdened the heart of many an old student who remembered last years trouble in regard to a coach , to see Captain Young meet a broadshouldered young man at the train on Thursday evening and introduce him as H . C . Johnson , of West Chester , Gettysbuigs new coach . Mr . Johnson has had a large experience both in playing and coaching . He began his foot-ball career on the West Chester High School team , and after several years entered the team of West Chester A . C , probably the best club team in Eastern Pennsylvania . He played with them three years , during two of which he was captain and coach . Entering the University of Pennsylvania , he promptly went into the game , and has played quarter or half for several years , captaining the Reserves last year . It is easily seen on the field that Mr . Johnson understands the game , and we hope that he may be able to give the men some of the spirit and dash of the men he was associ...
