On the l'laza, Santa Fe. Three times a week the military band plays in the plaza at sunset, and I ac cept the invitation of General Edward Hatch, that bravest of cavalry-men and most genial of gentlemen, to join him in a cigar at headquarters, and listen to the music. The benches on the plaza soon fill up, and the jTortales that form a complete colonnade over the sidewalks around the whole square became popu lous with pleasure-hunters. It is a tri weekly acquaintance day for tho whole town. A noisy train of long-horned, thin-bodied oxen, dragging trailed wag ons piled high with freight from the railway terminus, comes round the cor ner, and stops to listen before unyoking for the night, the whacker's long whip cracking like pistol-shots as he lashes his unwicldly beast into position. Half a dozen donkeys, loaded'with immense burdens of fagots cut in the foot-hills, are allowed to stop their peregrinations in search of a customer, and make squealing remarks to the rival burros of the...

I Tastefnl Trifles. " How I wish I could make some of the many pretty things in the way of baskets, boxes and other dainty trifles that are just now displayed in the shop windows," was the remark we heard one lady make to another a few days ago. She continued, " Of course the expense of buying one or two is not great, but as soon as you have had a chance to admire the pretty effect of one, you want another to beautify some other spot, and before half the selec tions one would like to make are de cided upon, the sum demanded prevents her completing the list even mentally." Now we heartily sympathize with this lady in her desire to possess a share of the tasteful articles of use and beauty, which at this particular season of the year are so prominently displayed, and think that the directions we are enabled to givo her in regard to the construction of some of them will be duly appreci ated by man- others, especially those who are where such things are not to be found. It has ban staled by Judge Key that as far as he ia familiar with the Republican sentiment in the South and as far as he had an opportunity to judge, Gen. Grant is by all means the strongest caniidate in that section. Representative llouk, of Tennessee, says that owing to the peculiar condition ot politics, growing out ol the attempt on the part of the Democrats to repudiate the State debt, that it would be an easy matter, provided the Republicans took advantage of the opportunity, to bring oter a large portion of the Democratic party who are in far or of the payment of the honest debts of the State, and on this ground he thinls a ticket composed of Grant and Ke...
