MO88 AGATES. NALPR ME3EE R INi DA2BURY NEWS. The prospect for a large watermelon crop next season is excellent. \. lien the ice cracks run north and south in the gardens, it is a sure sign of large watermelons. The careful farmer will examine his tele graph poles these cold days and see if they are liable to suffer from frost. Old carpets are good to protect them from the driving winds. In the spring they should be wash ed with a strong solution of soda and vine gar. This will prevent the sun from injur ing the parts frozen under the bark. This is the month to prepare for sprinm work. The mowing machines should b oiled and run around the lots a few timei to see if they are in good order. If th4 corn planters work hard, they should be sent to the blacksmith shop and sharpcnd. The thrifty husbandman will see that hii grindstones have a fresh coat of paint, an( that his threshing machines are well sand papered. It is just one-sixteenth of an inch al Crosby's floral establishment betwee...

DEATH OF A VETERAN. General Lorenzo Thomas, Ad Interim. Washington Correspondence Cincitn'ati (izette, Marrh r. ON FAME'S ETERNAI. CAMPIfNO OROUND ILiS SILENT TENT IS SPREAD. Another brave old soldier has been sum moned to lay down his emblems of warfare and enter that country of "the beyond," whotse every path is peace. General Lo renzi, Thomas has served half a century of his seventy-two years in the regular service and won enviable spurs in the Mexican war, as well as shoulder-straps of increased rank. When Andrew Johnson with ruth less hand endeavored to oust Secretary Stanton, whose unbending obduracy would not support the President's "policy," Gen. Thomas was selected to fill the position of War Secretary ad interim. Stanton, how ever, was fully determined to retain his grasp upon his official portfolio, and, con sequently slept, ate, and lived for several consecutive days and nights in his room of state at the War Department. General Thomas, with an equal amount of "true grit...

Jas. H. lD, : Editor and Publisher. ISSUED EVERY FRIDAY. -The recent "strikes" in the Pennsyl vania coal mines threw 8.5,000 men out of employmtient. It is just the reverse of that in the gold mines. "Strikes" give men employment. -After a somewhat laborious effort to reconcile the resolutions of the two railroad meetings at Gwendale we are obliged to give it up and respectfully refer them back for further information. -The Missoultan wishes to know our authority for the statement that Missoula has a fair prospect of a two company pest; and that Delegate Maginnis pledged his efforts to that end during the last campaign.
