P., in NlMtMtith Ceutury.]^The ralley of the Salt lake ia 5,000 to^6,000 feet above tea level about 200^miles long north and south, aud of ir^^regular width, varying from twenty to^fifty miles. On the eaat side the 'Wa^^satch range and on the west the^O^uirrh mountains rise abruptly, bare,^ragged and precipitous. To the north^the valley is closed in by the mountain^ranges, and southward it rises opto the^tableland of Arisona. Twenty miles^^oath of Salt Lake City is Lake Utah,^a beautiful sheet of pore water, and^from it northwards through the valley^flows a considerable stream, called the^Jordan, to the Great Salt lake, which^without any outlet fills the bottom of^the basin.
