Oregon was admitted as a state on the 14th of February, 1859. News thereof was received In Oregon on the arrival at Astoria of the steamer Urother Johnathan, from San Fran cisco, at 40 on the morning of March 15th. The news came to San Francisco by overland mail, which left St. Louis on the 14th of Febru ary nnd arrived at San Francisco on the 10th of March. On Tuesday, Mnrch 14th the news was received at Oregon City. There was no telegraph lines or dally mails In Oregon. Communications were maintained up and down the "Wil lamette valley ulmost wholly by boats on the Willamette river. No boat was to start from Canemah to Salem that day, and it was supposed that the people at the capitol would like to hear the news.
