DAILY EVENING STAR. CITY ITKJIB. Bail of the Ugly Club.?As anticipated, this was a b**ut\j *1 affair, and an exceedingly merry one at that. Island Hail never had a larger or happier party. AH wris sport and enjoyment, the ladies entering into the spirit of the proceedings with charming naivete. The contest for the variors prizes was quite anima ted. biu all the ugly ones had to get out or the way tor the Star, which produced a man uglier than mud. He had a head like a pine tr*e bur, eves likea weasel, none like he tusk of an elephant, with ? Marking brush tmueaih, hoofs that would weigh twenty pounds, attached to a body of only about a hundred, and the graceful Puck was named llawfk. He was all huff, iu?d the ladies having decided in his favor, the knife was in due form presented to him, of which he seemed a* " proud as a dog with two tails." Then there was another presentation, Mr. Lloyd, who was as "ina.1 as a march hare" at being beaten br Hough, selected a lioMiely lady, and in a...

WASHINGTON CIT Y : VTFJ?NEHPAY AFTERVOOV. XOVEMnKK 30 THE WAR OF MISREPRESENTATION. We do not know whether we- are more amused than pained by the pertinacity with which certain presses pursue the -imp of flagrant, unblushing misrepre sentations against the prc-ent < iovern nient of the United States, in connection with their party affairs in New York. Knowing well that they are telling their wonderful stories, without the slightest t>elief in their truth, we arc pained to find so large number of American jour nalists thus participating in the work of demoralizing the press of the country. We are amused, on the other hand, at the Munchausenism of their statements for facts, >?y way of giving plausibility to their conclusions. <Nir neighbor of the Baltimore Amcriran is a fair type of an honest portion of these journalists. We must do him the justice to say that he has persuaded himself of the truth of the 1 euiarkable stories he writes, like the naval captain who talked so...
