Very few of our readers have any idea of the large business ereated by the Salem iron furnaee, and the immense amount of freight whieh it causes the railroads to handle. The furnaee at Salem has a working capacity of one hundred tons of pig iron per day, and furnishes the Norfolk and Western railroad with four earloads of iron per day, which weans fourteen hundred ear-loads of pig-iron freight per annum, a large portion of which goes north, to be used by northern manufacturers. In order to make tin* one hundred tons of pi> iron tin- Norfolk and Western railroad is required to deliver at the furnaee each day four hundred tons, or sixteen oar-loads of raw material, embracing iron ores, limestone, coke and coal. This means fifty-six hundred car-load? of material per annum. The total annual aggregate business created by our furnace is...
