TEXAS 78957 MAY 20, 1976 l)ur^ inions No News Is Good News ft becomes very easy, when you're sitting in the editor's chair, to begin to think that you determine what goes into your newspaper. Hut you do only to a certain extent. Of course there are mattes of policy as to what you absolutely must-or can- not—print, and these decisions you make each week, as it becomes necessary. But a little reflection begins to reveal that with the excep- tion of this column of opinion and a few 'Off the Record* items, you have very, very little to say about the content of your newspaper each week. You come to the realization that what your news is is determined, completely and total- ly independent of your judgment, by the community you seek to serve. * What the community actually does--or in some cases, to do-is the only material you have each week to make a newspaper. Of course there are features of various sorts, and a few columns, but even those piec...

TEXAS 78957 PAGE 3 Amendments Adopted THE COUNTY « In addi- tion to approving two routine changes in the CAPCO Manpower Consortium provisions, the Commission- ers' Court of Bastrop County meeting in regular session Monday. May 10, heard a delegation request- ing changes in the county game laws, discussed county taxes, considered a recom- mendation for a change in the manner of payment of a few employee's salaries, and debated over a request for funding by Combined Community Action. The two changes in the Manpower Consortium provisions, as explained by CETA Program Director Harold Goeraer, should work to simplify the admin- istration of the consortium. The first consolidates the present executive committee and the Manpower Advisory Planning Council (MAPC) — the two bodies responsible for administering the pro- gram—into a single govern- ing board. This board is to be composed of a representa- tive from each of the eight counties in t...

MAY 20. 1Tb THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SMITHV1LLE. TEXAS 78957 PAGES 71st Wedding Anniversary bv Richard Moree There is a trend among some in our faster paced society which contends that marriage is possibly becoming out of vogue. However, there are also those who just as strongly support the continuing popularity of the institu- tion of marriage. On May 17, 1905, in Lafayette. Indiana, Roy Waples and Minnie Ratliff decided to be united in mar- riage. This marriage has lasted 71 years and is still going strong. Rov and Minnie were recently honored with a party celebrating their 71st wedding anniversary at the Towers Nursing Home ir Smithville where both re- side. PAGE 2 THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES. SMITHVILLE, TEXAS 78957 Thursday, May 27, 1976 S)iir/ X inions Class of '76 It seems to me that graduating in 1976 carries with it a greater-than-usual degree of responsibility. After all, the graduate faces all the usual obligations and life deci- sions. And in addition, just because he or she happens to be 18 or 21 or whatever the same year that the nation is 200 years old, people seem to feel he or she has even more to live up to. There seems to be a lot expected out of the Class of '76. New hope, new directions, new insights -- more so than of the class of '58 or '79 or any of those other, more ordinary years. Maybe one of those receiving a diploma this year will find the long-sought cancer cure, or settle forever the ancient tensions in Ireland or the Middle East, or develop a cheap, readily available source of energy. And maybe there's no possibility of any of that happening. Regardless, it seems to me that people are looking at this class, and...
