loc news YOUTH Continued from Page 6 services it offers, Miskinis said. "There is a lot of youth out there that needs help " Miskinis said the group's officials believe there are many thousands of gay students in Dallas-Fort who need support. "We served 650 youths last year," Miskinis said. "That's a drop in the bucket." Miskinis said the youth outreach team plans to contact other gay students through the Internet. "It's a different way of communicating with youth that we weren't even aware of," Miskinis said. "They are on the inside and already know how to do it." Miskinis said the group would be able to afford the renovations because of the contribu- tions it has received from groups such as the Dallas-Fort Worth Black Tie Dinner and Dallas Bears. Several contractors have agreed to per- form the labor at reduced prices, he said. "We're basically just going to blow the walls out and expand the space where we are," Miskinis said. The new schedule calls for group discussion nights on...

Within an hour of Catholic Charities' announcement, Governor Mitt Romney said he planned to file a bill that would allow religious organizations to seek an exemption from the state's anti-discrimination laws to provide adop- tion services. "This is a sad day for neglected and abandoned children," Romney, a possible 2008 presidential candidate, said in a statement issued while he was in Tennessee to address the Southern Republican Leadership Conference. "While I respect the board's decision to stay true to their principles, I find the current state of the law deeply disturbing and a threat to religious freedom," Romney said. Kerry Healey, Romney's lieutenant governor and a Republican candidate for governor, has 44 "If it condones discrimination it will violate our Constitution and I will oppose it." Representative Salvatore DeMasi, Speaker of the Massachusetts House 55 said she wouldn't support any legislation to cre- ate an exemption. House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi issued a statemen...

Policy change could endanger student groups Chesterfield County officials consider limiting gay-straight alliances in schools By Dionne Walker Associated Press RICHMOND, Va. — Chesterfield County schools will consider a policy change that could limit gay-straight student alliances. The change in the language governing school extracurricular groups follows an incident last year in which a support group for gay students and their allies invited an author whose work some parents deemed inappropriate for high school students. Changes to the current policy, adopted in 1988, will clarify the rights of student groups to school facilities under the federal Equal Access Act as well as setting stricter rules on the groups, explained schools spokesman Tim Bullis. While gay-straight alliances are not singled out in the new policy, the new rules will block extracurricular groups linked to sexually explicit language. The Capital Region Family Forum, a local branch of the Family Foundation, also i...

inalnews Activists arrested at Liberty, Regents universities Soulforce's 'Equality Ride' starts tour at school founded by Falwell; more than 20 taken into custody By Sue Lindsey Associated Press LYNCHBURG, Virginia — More than 20 gay rights activists were arrested on trespassing charges when they stepped onto the campus of Liberty University, the school founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell. Many of the activists were part of Soulforce, a Lynchburg-based group on its first stop of a nationwide "Equality Ride" tour to promote gay rights at the nation's conservative Christian uni- versities and military academies. On Tuesday, seven members of Soulforce were arrested on misdemeanor trespassing charges when they stepped onto the campus of Regents University, a private Christian graduate school founded by evangelical broadcaster Pat Robertson. The activists were expected to stop at two schools in Tennessee — Lee University and Union University — on Friday and Saturday. Most of those arrested...

Florida group backs bullying legislation Lawmakers considering 2 measures; only 1 lists students frequently victimized by bullies By Bill Kaczor Associated Press Eilyn Bogdanoff TALLAHASSEE* Fla. — Students, parents and other members of the Florida Safe Schools Coalition urged lawmakers Monday to pass leg- islation aimed at pre- venting bullying and harassment but to oppose a measure they say would weaken existing policies in some districts. Both bills would require that school dis- tricts establish policies prohibiting harassment ranging from teasing to violence. But Representative Ellyn Bogdanoffs legislation would prohibit singling out certain groups for protection such as racial and ethnic minorities and gays and lesbians. Bogdanoff, a Republican, said she excluded those categories on advice from Bully Police USA, an organization founded by Brenda High of Pasco, Wash., after her 13-year-old son, Jared, committed suicide in 1998 following constant bullying. inalnews Montana legislators require schools to adopt bullying policy Districts must meet requirement to satisfy accreditation standards; lawmakers leave specifics of policy up to individual schools Associated Press HELENA, Mont. — All Montana school dis- tricts must adopt policies against bullying, the Montana Board of Public Education has decided. The requirement that will take effect with the next school year must be met for districts to sat- isfy accreditation standards, the board decided unanimously on March 10. Districts are to adopt a policy "designed to address bullying, intimidation and harassment of students and school personnel." The finer points of the policymaking will be left up to local school boards. They will receive from the state lists of recom- mended features for their new policies. One rec- ommendation says policies should acknowledge that victims of bullying often are targeted because of their perceived vulnerabilities, which can include sexual orientation and...
