OUR ADELAIDE LETTER. (From our own Correspondent). [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 29 August 1874

OUR ADELAIDE LETTER. (From our own Correspondent). Northern Territory affaira have ac- quired considerable prominence during the interval since I last wrote. The tele- graphic reports of a couple of months since whetted our appetite for the fuller advices expected by the Gothenburg, and the arrival of the mails brought by that steamer was anxiously awaited. The reports received, the testimony of the returned gold seekers, and above all the exhibition of the magnificent collection of gold belonging to the English, Scot- tish, and Australian Bank, have done very much to arrest the feeling of in- security and loss which had previously seized upon scripholders, and which led to the disastrous collapse in all Northern Territory specs. The prospects of the reefs are decidedly reasouring, and al - though I am unable to report very much business in the share market, or to chronicle any very appreciable increase in the market value of script, still there is a greater disposition to hold an i...

Summary. Palmerston, August 29. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 29 August 1874

Summary. Palmerston, August 29. Although the orothenburg will not take away so much gold, on this trip, as ' she did in June last, there i* still the same confidence here &* tu the value of the reefs. At prpsent everything is in the preparatory stage. The older-established claims, such as those at Pine Creek, are com- pelled to leave off crushing in order to make more complete arrangements for water supply ; and the later claims, such as those at the Union, are await- ing the erection of suitable ma- chinery. Everybody, however, is busy, and when the next wet season sets in the yield of gold will no doubt be very large. In the meantime, the alluvial diggings at Sandy Creek are being vigorously worked by a few good men, and the bulk of the gold which the Gothenburg now takes away (about 2,000 ounces) is the result of their exertions. People must remember that in the matter of quartz-crushing a good deal has to be done before the gold can be regularly produced. It is an indust...

Northern Territory Times. PALMERSTON: SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 1874. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 29 August 1874

Dorait ®<¡rritorg gimes. PALMERSTON : SATURDAY, AUGUST ¿9,1874. THE Adelaide papers seem to be fairly puzzled over what thej' call the " embroglio " of our Wardens' Courts ; and no wonder, considering the con- flicting statements which they receive on the subject-one correspondent flatly contradicting another in the most delightful manner. As to the chief point at issue-whether quartz claims registered before the 1st March are subject to Warden's decisions the newspapers apparently lean to the opinion that all such claims were in- tended to be dealt with by the Wardens, just the same as others, if the working conditions were not ol - served. But no reasons are assigned for this opinion, and the writers admit that they are not well acquainted with the merits ol' the cases in dis- pute. As to the discussions in the As- sembly on this and kindred subjects, it is painful to see the spirit in which the members go about their work. The poor Northern Territory is made a wretched...

Burning Quartz. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 5 September 1874

Burning Quartz. Mr. H. B. Hawke, of Kapunda, writing to the Editor of the Register, under date July io, says: I quite agree with Mr. Small's remarks in his letter in the Register on the importance of burning quartz before crushing it, particularly in the Northern Territory. Having had a great variety of Northern Territory quartz sent to me for crushing, I found it contained considerably more sulphuret of iron than any quartz I have ever seen in Victoria. During my recent visit there 1 found that a large amount of capital has been in- vested in erecting very expensive machinery for saving and operating on pyrites. This has proved the salvation of a great number of Companies. Mines that were fust on the eve of being wound up paid splendid dividends after getting the gold from the pyrites. The reason that they do not burn their quartz in Victoria is that fuel is too expensive. They find it much cheaper to erect machinery to save the sulphurets (which sometimes amount to one or two hund...

The Concert. TO THE EDITOR. Sir-I quite agree with you as to the objection made with regard to one or two of the songs intro- duced at the recent concert-songs which were not allowed to be put on the programme, and therefore ought not to have been introduced as encores. " But, at the same time, would it not have been well to haye omitted the name of the singer in your notice oí the objectionable songs ? I am, Sir, &c, D. C.
