MISCELLANEOUS. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 27 May 1864

MIISCELLANEOUS. What constellation is like an empty fire place ?-The great bear. " See here, misther," said a lad who was treed by a dog, "if you don't take that dog away I'll eat up all your apples." A student in want of money sold his books and wrote home, " Father, rejoice, for now I derive may support from litera ture." '-' Ma, what. was that horrid creesher with a long neck we saw at the menagerie?" "My dear, it was Llama." "La! ma, was it ?" An Irishman, on being told that a cer tain kind of stove would "save half the coal," said, " Indade; then be jahers 1'11 take two of them, and save it all." It is a musical fact that every orchestra coufains at least two musicians with moustaches, one in spectacles, three with bald heads, and one very modest man in a white cravat, who, from force of circum stances, you willalways observe, plays on a brass instrument. A gentleman who took occasion on the Sabbath to doctor some cider, was taken to task by his good wife for labouring on that ...

(To the Editor of the M'Ivor Times.) [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 27 May 1864

(To the Editor of the 3'lcor Times.) Srn,--Permit me to publicly remind Mr. Furze that example is better than precept, and that, before a man published such a letter as that signed " Caustic" he ought to be sure that his beef bill is squared; and even then it is doubtful whether he has a right to say when the butcher shall kill the meat. I believe that Sunday is not the best day for slaughtering cattle, bat we should never have seen that letter if Mr. Townsend had not offended Mr. Furze. His Satanic Majesty can quote Scripture, and we often hear- of him re proving sin. I am, Sir,. Yours, &c., WHIPCORD. The annual vote for flogging the British soldier was carried, on Thursday, by a majority of only one, Mr. Bright making a good speech against it too late for the division. The stock arguments were, of course, all repeated :but no one answered this question-Is not the retention of flogging in camp the reason why respec table men do not enlist, except when in despair? If we want...

A TALE OF WOE. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 27 May 1864

A TALE OF WOE. In Georse Street West, Blackburn, lately lived one Alice Ashton, whose hbus band, poor fellow, had been a sufferor through the dis.tress which came over this listrict like a cloud. Alice was .the mother of three children, one eight years old, a second five years, and a third three years. She was lhst month in good health, and expecting shortly to experience the pains of maternity. In December of last year, food being scarce and clothing thin, and the nipping winds of winter making the family teel the horrors of their poverty, Alice applied for some clothint" at the store of the Relief Committee. It is, of course, known that the clothing is the gift of the nation ; and it being so, we narrate the story that kind-hearted people nmay judge whether at all times mercy is to be found in the dispensers of the charity. From the store poor Alice obtained a petti coat and two chetmises for herself, two shirts for her husband, ani petticoats for the children. The visitor in this...

INCIDENTS OF THE SHEFFIELD FLOOD. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 27 May 1864

INCIDENTS OF THtE SHEf'FIELD FLOOD. A laboring man named Wells, who lived in Cotton-walk, Sheffield, was a distance from home, getting water cressts, and his wife had gone out to the station to meet the consignment, with the intention of going out to sell them the next morning. She had left sleeping on the ground floor a boy, thirteen years old, and his sister, aged three years. Upstairs was an elder sister and three other children. The woman returned to the neighborhood of her house about one-o'clock, and was hor rified to find the whole district under water. She remained in an almost frantic state until the waters had partially sub sided, scarcely daring to hope that the son and daughter she had left asleep in the lower room could be alive. The other children looked out of the chamber win dow but could only report that they had heard their brother and sister scream, and had gone down stairs to see' what was amiss, but had been driven back by the water, which had reached a consider...
