Growth of Noxious 'Weeds- TO THE EDIIOB OF THE BHOAlHiVEN NEWS. Sir, — Through the medium of your paper I would like to call the attention of the Nowra and Central Shoalhaven Coun cils to the noxious weeds growing in the two municipalities, on the public roads and streets. In the vicinity of Tory's terrace and other parts of the town of Nowra, tho weed Sidra Retusha is crow ing to a great extent, so thick, indeed, that a dog could hardly crawl through them. On the Numba road, opposite Mr. Hugh Boyd's, Bathunt burr, mustard freed, and ink weed are completely taking charge of the place. The Dairying Industry. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 4 March 1893

Tke Dairying Industry Mr. William Kennedy, responding to the toast of ' The Judges ' at the TJlladulla Show luncheon last week, spoke of the improvements in the breeds of cattle and the vast extension of the dairying industry during late years. He compared (reports the UlXADUIXA. AND MlLTON TlMBS) the industry to-day ivitli wJjafc it was some 13 or 14 years ago. The coast farmers besides improving their cattle had also improved the quality of their butter. The butter he had judged there that day could not be beaten in any part of the world. There was a splendid ex hibit of butter at the Shoalhaven Show — better than anything he had pre viously seen; but the quantity and quality of butter there that day were better than Shoalhaven. He was sorry there were not more prizes, for many exhibits that had not received prizes were well worthy of them. He hoped the dairy farmers of the colony were not going to let matters stop where they were, but that they would take some action to guard and...

The Citizen's Duty. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 11 March 1893

The Citiaea's Duty. It has often' be said, as it has also Ueen 'freely demonstrated, that .thfi public work of a community such as ours is left to the few, the 'faithful few.' Many persons have satisfied themselves uoon that fact, and that is much to be regretted. They accept the position and allow the ' faithful few ' to proceed, and no more is said of the idlers than that they are apathetic. But much stronger lan guage has to lip used in regard to those who, — standing in the light of citizens having all possible privileges and sharing equally in all profits, — fail to do what is undoubtedly their duty as citizens. Briefly, it might at once be submitted in the plainest language that those who accepted the hospitality of the Mayor of Nowra on the 7th March last year and failed to return it at the meeting of Tuesday last organised in honor of the Mayor's re election, deserve to be kicked, and kicked, too, mighty hard. What treat ment is there in the whole matter? Persons who will ho...

The Drink Habit. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 11 March 1893

The Drink Habit It is needless to moralise on the direful effects of intoxicating liquors when used to excess. Moralists havo written thou sands of books, philanthropists have founded a6vlums Bud reformatories, phy sicians have labored and expostulated, - wives and -mothers havo tearfully pleaded, yet the direful fact romamB that the curse is more rampant than ever. What is to be done 1 Legislation has proved unavailing. Bo far as its goes, law is nght, but appetite cannot be controlled by the Btatule book. Wo muet treat the diink habit intelligently and understand ipgly, and when we claim that it is q. disease, and should be treated as such, we believe wo hare come near the method by which the problem can' be solved. Arguments, threats and punishment have proved futile. Let us now try reason and common sense. Drunkenness is the 'Si' outcome of a nervous disease, cither m acquired or inherited. The patient, in 1 . the great, majority of oases, is willing, K nay anxious, to be cured....
