HOW SPONGES ARE GATHERED ----+--- The Mediterranean Sea is over two thousand miles long, and over one million equare miles in extent, and scarcely knows the meaning of tides. And this lucky mass of water, in ad dition to its charm as a cruising re nort and delightful highway, aboundy in fish of every description, as well as turtles, coral, amber, and sponge. Now a sponge looks and feels like one piece of substance when taken from the water, and some lyeople re gard it as one complete living thing in itself. But because it can be pro pagated by cuttings and for other reasons, it is believed to be really A SKELETON CITY -a collection or colony of living be ings or animals to be counted by the thousand. The animals which in habit this compactly-planned city are among the lowest in rank of living things-the protozoa, a jelly-like mass, or masses, which are evicted before the sponge is of any use for The spongy skeleton adheres firmly to the sea bottom, or the rocks on which it grows, an...

Si lence reigned supreme for a time, un. til finally one bright-looking boy ven tured upon the following ? "Whenl I was on the West Coast," said the old sailor, "the mosquitoes used to stand on the stones and bark." "Great Heavens I" ejaculated I'll cher. USEFUL SWIMMING STROKES. THREE THAT ARE WELL WORTH PRACTISING. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 12 September 1912

USEFUL SWIMMING STROKES. -4t--- THIIEIE THAT ARIt WiLL WORTH PItACTISING. Once' a man can float on the water in confidence, he should learn the "skulling" stroke. The body is kept quite straight, but instead of the arms being held out beyond the hbead, they should lie, palms downwards, along the side of the body. By means of easy wave-like, semi circular movements of the hands from right to left, the body is kept floating and moving in the water, the recovery of the hands to the first position, after the stroke, being per-' formed just as the oarsman feathers his blade. 'Skulling" is a very'useful accosm plishment, say, if you have ventured too far out into the sea, and, sud denly overtaken by fatigue, yon wish to rest a little before going back. Under such circumstances it is wisest to wait till your strength re turns. A stroke which is perhaps more or namental than actually useful, though it is greatly applauded at exhititions of swimming, is the "pendulum" stroke. This is done pri...
