Cucumbers, may be sown, though rather late ; pinch the ends of vineBto prevent straggling. Lettuce. — Though likely to rim to seed in hot weather, may be grown by sowing seed jn well manured land in drills, thinning out when largo enough ; it will be ne cessary to keep well watered dnd grow ...

Sporting Notes. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 16 November 1900

Sporting Notes. It is estimated that there were between 70,000 and 80,000 people who turned out to see the last Melbourne Cup of the century run. Bigger crowds have been seen at I'leiiiington in the boom years of Victoria, but this was the largest attendance since 1888. Mr. H. Byron Moore, Sec. Victorian Sacing Club, roughly estimates the fcoturns at Flemington for the Cup to be about £3200 better than last Cup day. Showers in the early morning drew some of the betting on to the light weights, but in the afternoon the clouds lifted and the sun came «ut, so that Oloan Sweep's victory drew some money from the bookies. Clean Sweep the winner of the Cup is' ?tiwned by Mr J? R Forrest, and trained l-y J. Scobie. He is a black colt, 3 .years, by Zalinski — Benzine. He carried vst 101b, with A. Richardson up.
