DEATH OF MR. A. D PLEYDELL I The experiences of Mr. A. D. Pleydell in Coleraino have come to ' a tragic ending. His term with j I the council closed last Tuesday when j that municipal body decided to ap point a successor. Air. Pleydell went ' to Hamilton last Thursday and later in the day became so ill it I was necessary to make him an in mate in the hospital there. WOOL TRADE REVIEWED. DEMANDS INCREASING. RESTRICTED SUPPLIES. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 30 March 1914

WOOL TRADE REVIEWED. DEMANDS INCREASING. RESTRICTED SUPPLIES. Messrs. Goldsbrough, Mort, and Co. Ltd., have just issued their annual review of the trade, and from it we make the following extracts :— In view of the fact that Australia's prosperity is vitally dependent on her primary products, it is pi easing to chronicle another successful year in what is undoubted!}' the m;ist import ant blanch—her wool ouiput. The clip of 1913 will add some £32,000,000 to Australia's wealth, and that this result has been attained without any of the spoon feeding moth- , ods in force in oilier industries is effective testimony to the good work by the grower. Outstanding features of the season have been the inception of free wool into America, and the greatly in creased volume of exports of frozen mutton and lamb. The last free wool ' period was from IS94to 1897, when iin- I ports into the United States jumped ' tremendously, and were effective in I practically extinguishing the produc- I tion of ti...

TA[?]IFF PLUNDER To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 30 March 1914

TA..IFF PLUNDER To the Editor. Sir,—I am entirely in sympathy with Mr. Henry Pottage when lie states that we shall soon have to go far beyond the "living wage" idea. The wages question cannot be settled till the whole prodrct of labor is divided exclusively amongst those who do work useful to the com munity. That will eliminate all drones. I attack the policy of Protection, not because I believe Freetrade will be a final solution of the social ques tion, but because I know that so long as protective duties exist the main burden of taxation will be borne by the poorer section of the people. Change that system, and the way tomoie fundamental reform will be clear. ^Retain the antiquated method of protection, and progress is impossible. Progress is only possible when we take as our guide the ideal of equality "of opportunity for all. That, of course, excludes all preference and privilege for some. Consequently j democrats must oppose all such Tory systems as Protection which plunders ! ...
