SHERWOOD. Guildfbrd Post Office. [Newspaper Article] — The Cumberland Free Press — 24 August 1895

j SHERWOOD. j Guildford Post Offiice. It is very probable that the residents near the Station will convene a meeting witp a view of remedying an inconveni ence that has existed for considerable time, and now that there are a few business plaoes near the station, the Postal authorities should lose no time and study the residents. In the first plade the present Post Office is inconve niently situated, since there is no proper system of delivery. Those who reside near the Railway Station on both sides j (especially those in business)are very often caused much annoyance and in convenience through their letters being delayed for one day at the Post Office, and then sent to the Guildford station to be either called for, or delivered by theMerrylands letter carrier. How those on the east and extreme end of South Granville get theirs I do not know. However, it would be a good thing (and at the same time save a considerable amount of annoyance)if the Guildford Post Office was located at the ...

Lamb, J's.P., the police (acting on a complaint laid by Mr. G. T. Hunt, J.P.), proceeded against a well-known carter, W. Langshaw, for alleged cruelly ill treating a mare. It appeared Langshaw was found tainng wood from some land over which Mr. Hunt claims possessory authority. It was urged for the prosecution that the mare was ill-treated in that she was com pelled to draw such a heavy load that she in her struggles fell and injured her legs. Mr. Hunt, in tho witness-box, ad mitted that defendant did not flog tbe mare cruelly. Langshaw gave evidence rebutting the charge. The horse fell when start ing with the load of wood ; and witness took part of the load off. The case was dismissed. A SECOND CHARGE. Langshaw was, secondly, charged with stealing wood from land in the possession of Mr. Hunt. Prosecutor deposed that he, on the 10th inst., saw...

Stonethrowing at Chinamen. Some boisterous young fellows re turning from a football contest on Saturday encountered in John Street a Chinaman driving stationwards. It would seem that they thought to foul him to make way for them, but John insisted on the law of the road and kept to his own side. This annoyed the (-rough ' element, and eventually stones ! were thrown at the Chinaman. One or more summonses have since been taken out against the alleged offenders.
