SPIRIT OP THE PRESS. THE LAND QUESTION'. (From the Empire.) Our readers arc referred to another column for a copy of ''the memorial to tlie Governor -General which was presented to Mr. Parkes on the 20th instant. This document will be found to dossi-hx more than common interest, lioth from the im portant facts which it states, from the clear and forcible form of statement, and from the number aud respectability of tlie parties from whom it emanates. The memorialists are 202 inhabitants of Moreton Bay, of whom 113 are freeholders : and .they bring under the notice of the Governor ' some of the evils connected with the present system of leasing lands in the settled districts, that some remedy may be applied for their remowal.' ? The memorialists set out by expressing their belief ' that nearly all the occupied Crown lands within the settled districts ar« leased- from Govern ment at the npsot price.'' Now, whon a section is once leased under the Regulations of the 29th March, ,1618, pr...

THE ITOETH AUSTRALIAN. IPSWICH, TUESDAY, DEGEUBER 10, 1856. Iu answer to a question put by Miv{?pTira»EB to the SsohETASir fouCrown Lands und Pbbuc Works, in the liegblative Assembly, on the 27th ultimo, the, latter stated that it was the intention of Government to bnug in two Bills for the sale and occupation of Crown Lauds during the present session, when it is expected that a trial of party strength will be seriously made between the present stand-still Ministry and their opponents. Although we have very little hope that the contemplated measures will be of , a sufficiently liberal character to satisfy the country, they will probably be more so than was originally intended when the present Ministers came into power, in coiisoquence of their, having been forcedrr 8orely against their inclinations — to give way to a decided and compact opposition. We consider, therefore, that it is pur duty again . to caution the people to be on their guard, and to recommend them to watch narrowly ...

SUCCESSFUL RETURN OF THE NORTHERN EXPEDITION. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 16 December 1856

Since the above was in type, we have been favoured by a friend of ours with the follow- ing most important intelligence. Mr. Gregory, and his party of six, have arrived at Toromeo, the station of Mr. Simon Scott, all well, having made a most successful journey. After leaving the Victoria, their course was easterly, when they arrived upon the waters falling into the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Burdekin being the principal river traversed; and skirting the   heads of the waters falling into the East coast, they arrived at Peak Range. The party was frequently short of water during the journey, but never experienced any great difficulty   until their arrival at the Peak Downs, on which occasion they were one day and a night without water. The party represents the   Peak Downs' country as being one of the finest parts of the colony they ever saw. Of course, the intelligence respecting the country tra- versed, and other particulars, will be reserved &am...
