W.A. TURF CLUB MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 4 January 1883

Wt^TUSF-CLUB MEETING. Patron1 f His . .Excellency the Governor. Stewards : Lord Gifford, Messrs. E. Scott, R. F. Sholl, S. H. Parker, E. W.Howard, John ForreBt, and C. E. Dempster. Judge: ' Mr. M. Brown. Starter: Mr. E. T. Hooley. Treasurer and Secretary: Mr. R. A. Sholl. Clerk of the Course : Mr. George Strickland. Notwithstanding depressed times, the en thusiasm of a large section of the communi ty for horse-racing appears to be gaining in intensity, and each successive race-meeting in the various districts of the colony is look ed forward to with an amount of pleasure and interest known only to Englishmen. The blue ribbon of our local Turf, the Queen's Plate' creates, in proportion, quite as much speculation and interest as the greatest sporting event in the Eastern colo nies, yclept ' The Cup,' in Melbourne, or ' The Derby ' in the old country. FRIDAY, JANUARY, 5, 18831. ; The report of a surprise visit made by the Visiting . Justices, Messrs.1 Stone and Slade, to the Rottnest Penal Establishment was ' published in this week's issue of the Government Gazette. From this we find . that the visit was really a ' surpri'so' one, every '. possible precaution apparently having been taken to prevent the officers on the Island from -knowing that the Justices had left the main land ; we are also glad to learn, that the Prison was so very closely inspect ed ' that the visitors ' ' ransapked almost every part .of; : it.' The result of this ?' examination conclusively proves ' that the complaints, ? which appeared in our columns a,, few weeks ago, were not unfounded ; the mendacious assertions made by a provinciar daily contemporary that \ this report ' refutes the allegations made, against the - authorities -of the' prison of mismanagement and neglect' notwithstanding. Taking the alleged 'mismanage- ment' first, what does ? the report...
