Boring for Water. (Continued from our last.) [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 30 May 1879

Boring for Water. ( Continued from our lost.) Haying already given a description of the various boring tools, we will no*- proceed to give a description of the principal appliances in use for manipulating the rods aud tool?. For small holes and shallow borings I hive already dt-scribtd the modus operandi. For larger and deeper holes a tripod or three legs from 25 to 30 feet high are necessary ; but°if there be a well ia which the boring ia to bs done, a less height than this will suffice. A great advantage is obtained fro m a high tripod or a well, inasmuch, as the rods can bs coupled together and uncoupled in fewer lengths, there by considerablr economising time; a short distance from the lop of the tripod, horizontal braces ere to ba fixed, to which the various lengths of rods a-e to ba S3cured when they are withdrawn from the bore-hole. Another cross piece about 6 feet from the ground ia fix 'd to two of the legs and two uprights 3 or 4 feet ai.-art secured to this, with their bo...

Burra Athletic Sports. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 30 May 1879

Burra Athletic Sports. The third meeting of sports in connection with the Burra Amateur Athletic Club came off on Monday last at Copperhouse, in Messrs. Coles and Goodchild's pad lock, kindly lent for the occasion. The weather was anything but suitable for outdoor amusements, it being very wet and cold all the forenoon, which we have no doubt kept a great many from attending who would have done so had the weather been fine. But about twelve o'clock the weather   became a little finer and the people began to muster, and during the afternoon about 300 people must have been present. Cabs ran at intervals during the day. The Mintaro band played some very nice music during the after- noon. The sports on the whole went off very smoothly, with one exception, which was an accident in the Hurdle Race, when a trooper's horse happened to turn suddenly just as the three leading men (Brady, Camp and Freeman) were within- a few yards of the tape and knock- ing Brady and Freeman over,...
