THE DANUBIAN PRINCIPALITIES. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 25 April 1857

THE DANUUIAN PUINCIPALITIES. The Paris correspontlenco of tho Timts is chiefly de votod to the question of the Dunubian Principalitus. Their union, it is observed, would bo impossible except under a foreign prince ; and this was tl e opinion of M. Kisseleff less than ten days ago. At tho same time a foreign sovereign in the Principalities would be contrary to tbe Treaty of Paris, which establishes tbe Sultan as suzerain of these provinces.

MR. PARKES ON GENERAL TOPICS. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 29 April 1857

MR. PABKRS ON OI5NERAL TOPICS. Mr. Park i:s will have no reason to regret his visit to our beautiful district. The men of the Hunter received him with a warmth of enthu saism, which must have been as grateful to him, as it was honourable to themselves. It is not our intention to enter into a discussion of the circmn- 1 stances which led to Mr. Parkes' visit, as they have been sufficiently under the notice of the public already, but there are many topics of a general nature, upon which he touched in his speeches at Maitland and Morpeth which are worthy of serious consideration. It is gratifying to us to know that the principles in variably maintained in this journal have so power ful and earnest an advocate as Mr. Parkes. The political opinions of such a man, formed as they are after calm deliberation, and founded on a philosophical basis, necessarily carry with them a weight that must render them impressive on all classes of the community, liven his enemies cannot say of Mr. Parkes ...

HASTE! POSTHASTE! FOR THY LIFE III [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 29 April 1857

HASTH1 POSTHASTE! FOB THY LIFE III This was the ordinary super-inscription of letters in the reign of Elizabeth requiring urgent de spatch, and doubtless the carrier, sparing not the flanks of his horse, made good haste to the me tropolis, having to contend with difficulties in the shape of had roads, if passible worse than those in the neighbourhood of Maitland. Locomotion not hems' aided in those davs bv artificial roads and turnpikes, and the science of macadamising being entirely unknown, the simple track-ways over the natural soil were converted in wet weather into all but impassable quagmires, alike trying to the temper of the impatient horseman, and injurious to the establishment of a speedy communication. Still, notwithstanding these impediments, poli tical and other important intelligence was somo times transmitted at a remarkably rapid rate for | the times. The carrier pigeon, too, often made use of with such signal success in the transmission of intelligence, was trained ...

(To the Editor of the Northern Times.) Srn— Having a vparc hour to myself, I wish to inform you of the state of our township.
