OF modern movements of world-wide interest thoe Empire Day movement must be given, the palm itas the greatest. Many causes have contributed to this desire for Imperial union between the inotherland and her distant children, not the least of -which- is the, bitter hostility and- jealously maidfested against Great Britain by the European Continental Powers. These nations have on more than one occasimn during recent years expressed the conviction that Great Britain's proud position is a bubble, needing only to be pricked to disappear only into thin air. That the small islands forming the United Kingdom should be the centre of a world-wide dominion, numbering well over 300,000,000 souls; that tie Bri tish flag should float in overy quarter of the globe; that thile English lan guage should be spoken :as a master tongue, in so nirry parts of the world ; that the bulk of the trad...

New Road to the Railway Station. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 21 May 1909

New Road to the Railway Station. The question of a new road -leading through the park- to the railway sta tion has suddenly become a burning one in and about the township. A petition has been prepared and, we believe, numerously, signed by :those who are against,, the. openingvof,- the now road, and wish the main entrance to the town to Ie by way of, the police camp corner and Bon-street. Those in favor of the nlew road gave this petition a couple of days' start, and then commenced a counter one. . Both sides are apparently in earnest and are working hard. Deputations to the council at their next meeting are talked about and alively time is before' coun cillors whichever way.they may decide. Certain statements are nLado by those fighting against the new road to which the other side object arid say that signatures have been procured for the anti-road petition by misrepresents tion. These statements are :-First, that the new road is not any shorter; second, that it will run through th...

Thornton Tramway. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 21 May 1909

Thortton Tramway. The superiority bf the? product of the Rublcun forest, opened up by Messrs Clark, Kidd and Co, over others in various parts of the State, is continually being proved. Just now several buildings are in course of construction, and those whoihave been handling and working. up the local timber are loud in praising the several samples that have been used and have no hesitation in saying that for quality and durability thi" tiriiber now being cut and sold by the Rubicon Timber Company, surpasses anything yet produced in the country. Being well milled and thoroughly matured, surprising results have been obtained iy:. artisans in various' parts o13 the Strit, all of whom predict a ieady and unprecedented sale as soon as' the timber reaches the markets. Last week, Messrs; Oldfleld and Skinner, two gentlemen well-known as timber experts and millers, visited the site of their proposed mill and,,with two interested visitors, one of whom was the Hon. P. OUR RAILWAY. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 21 May 1909

OUR RAILWAY. The heavy rain has caused a cessation of work on the railway extension. The cut through thie Victoria Gap is finished and Ganger Brander has been busy about the station site. The old pound lane has at last been closed, that is, from the entrance up to the extent of the land used for the dead end. The route now has been changed to lhe road below Footit's, with a turn to the left and again to the right about 401 yards from the main road. It is opposite this dead end that the racecourse gate has been erected and in a very short while this road will be impassable. The cuttings in Allen's paddock are nearing completion, under Ganger Dela. hunty, and the same can be said of the Eglinton. The fencing at this part of the line is very frail and will require some attention before the train cotmmences running. To attempt to drive along the top when a train is approaching will be very dangerous. Therefore it is to he hoped a tall zorrugated iron fence will be substtuted. At any rat...

The Trawool Schemne Abandoned. "LThe Trawonl sto'rasee scheme is to be abandoned," the Premier (Mr Murray) announced, after Monday's meeting of the State Cabinet, "Yea is accordingly -eaved." A considerable amount of time was devoted by Ministers to the consideration oif this question, and drir;ng the evening they conferred 'with the chairman and members of the Water Supply Com waission. In a statement dealing with the position, which Mr Murray subsequently Isesued, it was stated that the Ministry 'had continued the investigations into the proposal fdr the construction of the large storage reservoir on the Goulburn near Trawool. These investigations had dis closed several new facts. One was thft in addition to the inundation of the township of Yea, and a section of the ,railway line, the difficulty of obtaining a foundation would be greater than was .expected. Again, the estimated amount of £2,000,000 for storage works would lnot be the full outlay required to malto the scheme reven...

MILKING MACHINES IN NEW ZEALAND. A WARNING TO FARMERS. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 21 May 1909

S ILKING MACHINES IN i NEW ZEALAND. A WARNING TO FARMERS. The 2dilking machine has taken a firm bol? of the principal dairying districts of New Zealand, and it is interesting to Isamt that the "Lawrence-Kennedy-Gil Bes" is becoming everywhere very popu las, no lets than ISo machines having been booked for delivery during August and September. Other makes of machines are being largely advertised and pushed, but level-headed, practical dairymen are Rat easily gulled or talked into buying machines that have yet to prove their worth in everyday work on the farm, and Ia the hands of unskilled labour. Time alone Is the test, and the up-to-date New Zealand dairy farmers prefer, now, that 1 somebody else should do the experiment ing. In the past, the colony has been the happy hunting ground for milking ma chine inventors, as dairymen know to their sorrow, many herds having been rutined by mrachiles that apparently did good work the first season, but which had da-istrous consequences the sec...
