The British Army. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 18 February 1887

Tlie British Army. Thk annual report on military prisons, which was presented to the British Parliament recently, is not altogether satisfactory reading, as. it shows that, although among the general population of the country all breaches of the law have been decreasing at a steady rate, military crime lias maintained its averago for tho space of nearly 20 years. The averago is a very high one, being S per cent, for courts martial, and more than 150 per cent, for commanding officers' punishments. The record of 7694courts martial out of a strength of 87,927 in the army at home is a very serious matter. It is also stated that, out of a total of 7018 military prisoners in 1S85, no less than 1560 were guilty of desertion. Desertion and insubordination are said to be offences mainly traceable to the uso and influence of intoxicating liquor.

Fresh Grapes. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 18 February 1887

Fresh (drapes. This is already an article of some con sumption among all classes. Hundreds of tons of fresh ripe grapes are annually sold audconsumod us fruit in most centres of population. Old aud young, all are fond of ' it, and indulge in it. It is found in tlio. dirty olntohcs of tho stroot-boy, and on the set-out tables of tho wealthy. Even habitually intrmperate men aro known to relish it. It has not only an agreeable flavour, and allays tho thirst and cools tho system, but its saccharino and other qualities mako it. most nutritive when not taken to excess. It is found for sale not only iu fruit shops, but fruit-hawkers carry it about in tho streets in baskets, making rapid sales. Sotno of theso hawkers havo aotually tho hardi hood to stand opposite public houses, and find their customers as numerous as thoso who patronise bars. The price of the fruit is cheap enough, but it might be made clicaper and still leave a profit to tho grower. An average yield in the colonies is abou...

A HEiWIXDEK. CJpijsnJERiNO tliOr great drawbaqk -itjhns been to Cforaki tliafc 'it lias been so dis gracefully neglected the aiattor of the fornio,tiQn .of .roailS and,' other, necessary public works, with the consequent serious loss to tho dwellers- therein and round about through tho impassability of the main' 'thoroughfares between this and | adjacent townships, we cannot help expressing our- astonishment that on the question of expenditure ou roads littlo or nothing was said by any of the(| candidates, and no questions were asked by electors.. Coraki can certainly boast of being the least accessible town in the northern distiicts— as far as roads arp concerned— and this state of things is mainly due to the dreadful apathy of tho inhabitants, and the neglect of it's representatives ; arid it would seem that .nothing .'shoit ; of a 'donblebackactipn earthquake will fairly rouse tho former from their torpidity.
