MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 31 August 1886

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. The news that eight French tirpold boatst have perished in mid-Atlantic with all their crews will help to in crease aind intensify the reaction in favorof the big fighting ships which has sot in.rather strongly of late. The mosquito of the sea, whichl was to sweepi the.ironcld off the face of the ocean, is daily losing its reputation, and we should not be surprised if, after this disatei , thle small boats should Ik confined to service on the coast and in landlocked waters. Bigger ships iwv Venture more, but little craft should hug the shore. The French (overn ment have made an evasive conntrdic tion of the report, which contirmas the belief that it is tune. The Madrid correspondent of one of the daily papers telegraphed recently that uinch ? excitement lhal prevaihCl thlir, ;ioing to a prediction, which had been circulated broadlcast, that the sworldvras to come to an end on June 24th.
