ANNUAL PICNIC. On Saturday. March 12, the aunual picnic at the employees of David Shearer, Ltd. was held under very favourable conditions at the Queen of seaside resorts—Victor Harbour. Fears were entertained during the former, part of the week that the weatner, which web close and sultry for many days, might end in a wet week-end. However, the clerk of the weather was kind and let off all tils fireworks previous to the day selected for the outing, much to the relief of all those preparing for the great event, and perfect weather prevailed. About 600 persons, representing the employees, their wives, and families, assembled iu front of the works of David Shearer, Ltd. at 6.16 a.m., and were conveyed to Apamurj-.t by lorry and motor cars, where they boarded the special train provided by the firm. The train left Apamurra at 6.20 a.m. and arrived at Victor Harbour at 11.5 a.m. On the arrival of the train at the Harbour, a general rush was made for the restaurants, refreshment rooms, and...

FOUR SERIOUS CHARGES. Defendants Committed for Trial. Mannum, Monday, March 14. (Before K. P. V. Sanderson, S.M.) CJarence Hook (19), Augas Hoy Rooster (22), Charles Edward George Reschke (18), were each charged se parately with having carnal knowledge of a girl between 13 and 16 years of age. Mr. R. Chamberlain, of the Crown Law Office, prosecuted and accused were represented by Mr. G. I. Ziesing. After evideuce for the prosecution was tendered, defendants reserved their defence and were committed for trial. In each base bail was granted on personal surety and one other eacn of £60. Frederick Gubblns (ix), was chargei with having committed an indecent as sault on a girl under the age of 16 years. " Mr. R. Chamberlain prosecuted and Mr, G. I. Zieptng appeared for the defence. The defendant, after evidence for the prosecution had been tendered, reserved his defence and was epoi' mitted for trial. Ball was allowed in two sureties of £60 each.

THE RAILWAY'S BUS. The Liberal candidates (Messrs. Hannaford, liomburg, and Eandell) ad dressed a full bouse at Mannum on Weduesday last. Dr. Fisher was in the chair. Something of a sensation was caused at question time, when Mr. D. Shearer, after stating unit the Govern ment was running its bus against the private bus and losing money on it, and asked whether tue candidates supported the Government's action, was told the views of the candidates. Mr. Homburg said his feelings could be best understood by telling his au dience that he had patronized the local man ever since he started. The po sition had lately taken a decided turn. The ' Railways Commissioner had no power to run motors on the roads, consequently the Hill Government in troduced legislation lat£ December, which specially gave Lhe Commis sioner power to do so. ELECTIONS. •During the past week all the can didates for Murray have visited Man num and placed their views before the electors. On Tuesday, Mr, J. F. Godfree, Independent candidate, met the electors at the institute. Mr, hi. O. Wilksch presided over a moderate attendance. The candidate was lis tened to with attention, and was ac corded a vote of thanks at the close the meeting. On Monday, March 14, the Labour candidates (Messrs. F. BALLS. On Thursday evening, March 10, a I ball was held in the Mannum Institute | the proceeds of which were in aid of j the recreation ground improvement j fund. Unfortunately the evening was | hot and sultry, and consequently the ' attendance was not so great was had been expected. Still, those who j braved the heat, spent an enjoyable evening and the function was in this respect successful. The decoration of the hall had been carried out in a tasteful manner, which added to the pleasure of those present. Mr. A. E. withers acted as M.C., and the music was supplied by Miss K. Pock and Mr. Harrold. The committee in charge of the function were Messrs. A. E. Withers (convenor). M. W, Arnold, L. Nenke, E. G. Bottroff, and R. McKin hou.
