The Western Champion. Vita sine literis mors cst. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 28 April 1880

Vita tine litcru mon at. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, Al'KIL 28. IN a late issue of this journal a corres pondent advocated the establishment in Blackall of a local hospital. He pointed out that Tambo Hospital was at an in convenient distance from this town, and too far away for sick persons to l>c removed from the one place to the other with safety. This was the only argument advanced in support of the proposal, and certainly insufficient to convince us that we require a second hospital in the district. For one argu ment in favor of establishing such an institution as our correspondent sug gested, we can bring fifty against it. In the first place there are hospitals already at both Tambo and Arnmac, and with our scanty population it is impossible to expect the Government would support a third. They refused to do so six years ago when there was only one hospital in the district, and it is not likely they will change their decision now there arc two here. The Tambo institution Las cost a ...

Protection from Burglars in Sunedin. THE inhabitants in Duncdin, soys Uie Otogo Time*, have never been in such a elate of anxiety for the safety of their lives and pro* petty as at the present time. The dastardly and brutal outrage in Cumberland street was certainly enough to strike terror into the hearts of the most fearlcRs, while the many attempts at arson end burglarly that have been made of late have had the effect of put ting our citfeens on their guard. An Unpleasant Recapture. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 28 April 1880

An Unpleasant Beoapture. A MAN started a public house in Iuvcrcargill, the capital city of the flourishing province of ftoutliland iu New Zealand. Here hc-and liis wife and three or four children lived happily fur a time. Business increased, sufficiently so to warrant the employment of a barmaid, and in a few days a blithe and handsome damsol appeared oa the scene, Her pretty form struck the vision of the landlord, who basked in her preocuce, and determined to come as near the marital relations as he could. Taking an inventory of his assets, he found himself the possessor of a legal wife and four children, a smart little hostelry, and hard cash to the tunc of something like £'JOO. As a sort of set-off, he was indebted to various parlies in the sum of £200. Taking every thing into Account, lie determined upon vamosing with "a wife that wasn't his," aud mariying her for bettor or for worse-the latter in all human probability-when safe j across the water. A Life's Romance. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 28 April 1880

A Life's Romance. The romantic vicissitudes of the early life of the Countess Bolangc de Kramer have onoc more become the iolk of the Paris salons, and they one, indeed, so extraordinary, that, used as materials of a novel, they would spoil the book by their lack of verisimilitude. One night in 1801 a little girl about one year was deposited in the drawer of the Foundling Hospital at Brest. She was dressed with mndi finely, and a note attached to her skirt told that her name was 6oIangc, and that she would be reclaimed by her father. The claim was never made, however, and in due time the child was transferred to the Orphan Asylum to be educated there. As she grew np she developed a most cxtraor dinnry beauty, but her intellect appeared tu be very weak, and she suffered from frequent nervous fits. When she was 12 years old she was sent out into the streets to sell flowers, and her beauty nnd modesty attracted many people's good-will, but she grew weaker Mid weaker, and at last appare...
